Movie Reviews

Associated Press - 9/10 by Kathy HorakThe movie concludes on a saccharine note intended to send you away smiling and it might, if you like fairy tales where no alcoholic is unlovable.
Entertainment Weekly - 9/10 by Joe NeumaierMy Favorite Year, a slight but sweet backstage comedy, now provides three levels of nostalgia: for the era of swashbuckling stars like Errol Flynn; for the golden age of TV that supplanted it; and for the presence of Peter O’Toole.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 8/10 by Jay ScottRichard Benjamin's direction surprisingly provides a dizzy pace and inventive set-ups, aided greatly by cinematographer Gerald Hirschfeld and editor Richard Chew.
EmanuelLevy.Com - 8/10 by Emanuel LevyPeter O'Toole received an Oscar nomination for playing an eccentric womanizer and boozy star (modeled on Errol Flynn) in this charming comedy set in the 1950s.
The New Yorker - 7/10 by Pauline KaelBenjamin's direction consists largely of giving Richard Benjamin inflections to most of the line readings; for the rest, he blandly shoots the screenplay, leaving large gaps in the narration unfilled and significant contradictions in the characters unexplained.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Janet MaslinA funny and good-natured comedy that marks the directing debut of Richard Benjamin. Mr. Benjamin works in a steady, affable style that is occasionally inspired, always snappy and never less than amusing.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 7/10 by Dennis SchwartzAn excellent vehicle for O'Toole to shine in a tour de force performance.
User Review - 10/10 by Katie LI think it's the combination of Peter O'Toole, laugh out loud comedy, that guy from "Perfect Strangers", the behind the scenes workings of a TV show, the 30 Rock setting and that shot of 45th (there's the Music Box! there's the Booth!) that made me thoroughly enjoy this movie. Truly very funny, but it's got those moments of vulnerability/self-reflection. I find it interesting that this was loosely based on Mel Brooks' life.
User Review - 10/10 by Karen MThis is my dad's favorite movie, and I enjoyed it a lot as well. It has a lot going for it - a simple story with a good script and a spectacular performance from its star, Peter O'Toole. It's also one of those smart comedies that provides a lot of laughs, but some genuine sentimental moments as well. Set in 1954, Peter O'Toole plays Alan Swann, an infamous Hollywood movie star based on Errol Flynn (one of my all-time favorite actors) who's now past his prime, and set to make a guest appearance on Stan "King" Kaiser's "Comedy Cavalcade," which is based on Sid Caesar's "Show of Shows" (the movie's executive producer, Mel Brooks, wrote for "Show of Shows," as did playwright Neil Simon) "Cavalcade's" freshman writer, Benjy Stone, is made responsible for Swann and ordered to keep him out of trouble until showtime. (Trivia for long-time "Simpsons" fans - the episode where Bart meets drunken cowboy star Buck McCoy is based on this movie). O'Toole's performance is nothing less than magnificent - he plays Swann so naturally, and even though Swann is a larger-than-life persona, none of O'Toole's performance feels fake or unnecessarily over the top. He'll make you laugh one minute, and get misty-eyed the next. It's one of those performances that just has to be seen. It helps that he's got a great script to work with and co-stars that know how to deliver it. It's an older, nostalgic movie, that might not be for everyone. If you're willing to give it a shot, though, O'Toole's performance alone will make it worth your while.
User Review - 10/10 by Daniel SHilarious movie and I enjoyed Peter O'Toole's performance. I enjoyed the fact that it was loosely based on behind the scenes at the old Sid Caesar shows and that Mel Brooks was an executive producer. O'Toole should have won an Oscar for this role!
