eCinemaCenter.comGabe LeibowitzCharming as can be, but with a dark underbellly that belies it.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel Levymax Ophuls's merry-go-round narrative, based on Schnitzler's famous play, is exquistely directed and played by best actors of Frenhc cinema: Darriuex, Signoret, Barrault.
Turner Classic Movies OnlineSean Axmaker... a film of sparking wit, visual grace, continental sophistication and elegant poise.
Classic Film and TelevisionMichael E. GrostVisually brilliant, innovatively told drama.
LarsenOnFilmJosh LarsenIn what it means to do - capture the first rush of attraction - La Ronde has few screen equals.
New York TimesWalter GoodmanThe performers are as seductive as the script. It's quite an affaire.
User ReviewEdgar CSeveral related "liebelei" blossom in front of the screen and the turn-of-the-century Vienna is now proven to be Ophül's favorite scenario to construct his forbidden and passionate stories, this time in a free-flowing and episodic manner. The merry-go-round is the most perfect allegory of the romance existent in the world; we may change our spot or sit on another horse, it may go fast or slow, there may be technical difficulties, but in the end, the story repeats itself over and over again, and we belong to the same cycle. Walbrook is a brilliant male version of cupid. 99/100
User ReviewDimitris SThe blooming interactions of couples, romantic, idealistic, majestic.Fragmentary affairs, juxtapositions in lifelong particles. The question is,do we really accept those 6 degrees of separation or the carousel will embrace us all.
User ReviewJean FSexy, witty, endearing-- I've wanting to see this feelm for decades and wasn't disappointed. A bit uncomfy watching it with the in-laws, though as it's pretty much sex, sex, sex. I heart Anton Walbrook so.
User ReviewMaxwell SMax Ophuls' most playful film. More eye-popping than "Madame De...", but not necessarily better. An outstanding achievement for French cinema. Max Ophuls know the camera inside out. It was said in an interview with his son (Ophuls) that he only had 2 days for each act, which I find very surprising since each shot is done with such care and such precision with the camera (as usual with Ophuls) that I wouldn't ever expect such a short time period to shoot each scene, especially with such long shots. Simply a great film, that affects me very personally. Also the merry-go-round is genius, and a beautiful narrative set piece.
