Movie Reviews

Film Comment Magazine - 9/10 by Kent JonesThe simple structure, unwinding over roughly 36 hours, unassumingly encompasses a lifetime of disappointment and inescapable male foolishness. It's quite a rich, absorbing spectacle.
Combustible Celluloid - 9/10 by Jeffrey M. AndersonHong sticks to lengthy, static shots, but still somehow manages a heartbreaking grace.
New Yorker - 8/10 by Anthony LaneWoman Is the Future of Man is doomed to infuriate, and its scrutiny of disconnected beings, filmed in long, hold-your-breath takes, might feel like old hat to anyone reared on Antonioni, yet Hong has a grace and stealth of his own, and his scenes tend to tilt in directions that few of us would dare to predict.
Film Journal International - 8/10 by Eric MonderIsn't terrible. but it doesn't linger well in the memory.
Seattle Times - 6/10 by Tom KeoghAcutely perceptive and mournful character study.
New York Times - 5/10 by Manohla DargisMr. Hong is not yet the equal of Mr. Antonioni, but it has become increasingly difficult to see intellectually stimulating, aesthetically bold films like this in American theaters.
Not Coming to a Theater Near You - 3/10 by Leo GoldsmithProvocative, even disturbing in its resistance to categorization, demanding from its viewers a response without the reassurance of psychology or narration.
User Review - 10/10 by Albert PThis movie kicked my ass, and I think a lot of guys don't want to admit it, but it kicked their asses too.
User Review - 10/10 by veronica mThis is a film that haunts you long after you see it. It seems slight or confusing in a number of ways after you watch it, but it eventually sinks in (for me at least) that it is a strong indictment of human nature while at the same time a sympathetic view of human frustration, obsession, and selfishness. The very small role of the Chinese waitress is something like the moral center of the film. Hong makes sex scenes that are at once disturbing, erotic, and depressing.
