In 1939, Germany's Hamburg-America Line announced a voyage from Germany to Cuba. 937 people, the vast majority being Jews, signed up for the opportunity to escape Nazi Germany. Unbeknownst to the passengers, the visas they purchased were from a corrupt Cuban director of immigration, and they were invalid. Upon arrival in Havana, only 28 people were allowed to disembark, while the rest remained on board for weeks as they sailed to Florida, and eventually Canada, searching for safe haven. Sadly the ship returned to Antwerp after more than a month at sea. Forced back under Nazi rule as the low countries fell, it is estimated that approximately 250 of the refugees died in the extermination camps in occupied Poland.
Leave your thoughts about Voyage of the Damned.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyToo bad that Voyage of the Damned is done as an all-star, cheap melodrama, fictionlaizing a riveting WWII-Holocaust story
Creative LoafingMatt BrunsonIf anyone emerges as first among equals, it would be Max von Sydow, who lends enormous dignity to the role of the ship's captain.
PopMattersJ.C. Maçek IIIThere is no Indiana Jones to save the day and no pat Hollywood ending to revise history. Voyage of the Damned is unquestionably a serious drama and treats its subject matter with the dignity that it should.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Victor DwyerThe huge cast seems to share in the sense of confusion, and what might have been an excellent treatment of an important story merely falls flat.
NewsweekJanet MaslinRosenberg here confuses seriousness with tedious solemnity, and with the star glut has produced a compacted TV series.
The GuardianPaul HowlettMovies as clumsy, tasteless and self-righteous as this are worse than merely boring. By exploiting the tragedies of real people, some wildly fictionalized, The Voyage of the Damned attempts to turn them to profit without giving them any measure of the respect that is due.
