Leave your thoughts about Kabei: Our Mother.
Seattle TimesJohn HartlPartly because they're relatively rare, homefront movies usually offer a fresh perspective on the tragedies of World War II. That's the case once more with Kabei: Our Mother, a sad and stirring drama from the other side of the Pacific.
New York TimesJeannette CatsoulisEnriched by Mutsuo Naganuma's velvety photography, the director's restrained emotional grammar is surprisingly affecting.
Filmcritic.comDon WillmottPainful though it may be, Kâbê is finely crafted and totally enjoyable. Watch
New York PressSimon AbramsThis is not a story about lamenting the inevitability of time but rather of living in denial.
New York PostV.A. MusettoFor those who prefer movies of substance, there are alternatives -- and I don't mean Terminator Salvation.
rec.arts.movies.reviewsLouis ProyectDeeply powerful study of a family trying to survive repression and poverty in wartime Japan with much in common--unexpectedly--with the director's Samurai trilogy.
User ReviewPhillip MA touching film, although I am boggled by the meaning behind Kayo saying on her deathbed that she wanted her husband in this world and not the next, causing Teru-bei to collapse in tears. I don't get that. Overall, a moving masterpiece. When it comes to dramatic, emotional films, the Japanese really go all the way. Sheesh! The floodgates were wide open when I watched this movie.
User Reviewsedney dA movie that I am just at a loss of words to describe. Needless to say, by the end of the movie most viewers will be left in tears in seeing the situation this family has gone through in World War II Japan has the father of the family is arrested for 'thought crimes', leaving the mother (the 'Kabei' of the title) struggling to keep the family going. Directed by Yoji Yamada (of Twilight Samurai fame).
User Reviewaaron aThe movie info says a lot about this movie, but this is my piece. This is a historical drama. A human drama and of course, a love story. A story narrated from the daughter, Teru-bei about the life and times of her mother. This is a love story Kayo - a loving mother, a loyal daughter, a good wife and a great woman - towards her family. I watched this movie on Mother's Day and yes, this is the best movie tribute to a person called 'mother'. 5 star: Great performance by the casts. Great script and plot. Great directing. And of course, the cameo of Baisho Chieko was awesome. :)
User ReviewVincci PSo heartbreaking, but I love it! This is the best performance from Asano Tadanobu (tied with "Last Lives") to date by the way.
