Movie Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzBy the third act, I felt as boxed in as the protagonist.
EmanuelLevy.Com - 7/10 by Emanuel LevyDame Edith Evans received Best Actress Oscar nomination and the N.Y. Film Critics award for this grim psychological drama about an elderly women who hears threatening (imaginary?) voices.
The Spectator - 6/10 by Penelope HoustonThe film is odd and uneasy : through coarse-grained effects it keeps slamming shut doors it has half-opened. But the central performance is a great one.
User Review - 8/10 by Thiago AAn intriguing, slow paced look into the life of the elderly. The Whisperers tells the story of an impoverished old woman living alone in a seedy apartment who enjoys a rich fantasy life as an heiress. When she discovers stolen money hidden by her son, she believes her fantasy has come true. Writes one critic: "It's a pity this film isn't better known. It deserves a bigger audience. The superb work of photographer Gerry Turpin and Director Bryan Forbes made this bleak story all the better with just the right amount of closeups and odd-angle shots, and some striking film noir-like light and shadows. This would be a stunner in high-definition. Then, of course, you have the wonderful acting by Edith Evans, who plays the central character, "Mrs. Ross." Some think she got robbed out of the Oscar the year this was eligible, and they may be right." NOTES about the film: 1 Lead actress Dame Edith Evans was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and won the BAFTA Award, the Silver Bear for Best Actress award at the 17th Berlin International Film Festival, the National Board of Review award, the New York Film Critics Circle award, and the Golden Globe Award all for Best Actress. 2 The title refers to the creatures a very poor, old lady (Dame Edith Evans) imagines in her paranoid fantasies.
