In the 80's, after seeing his father and lumberjack foreman being hit by a protestor against the deforesting and arrested by the police, the boy Gus kills the protestor with a chainsaw. In the present days, Samantha, who is traumatized after being abused by her former boyfriend Jimmy, travels with her pothead friends in a van to the American Free Love Festival, a rock-and-roll concert in the woods. Near the location, they are assaulted by three local hillbillies, but they succeed to arrive in the festival. Meanwhile, Mayor Hal Burton and Deputy Buzz Hall try to give a minimum of organization to the event. However, a deranged psychopath serial-killer wearing a mask of Ronald Reagan uses an ax to kill the pacific stoned hippies.

Dread CentralJohnny ButaneHorror fans with a sense of humor will really enjoy this slice of gory goodness.
eFilmCritic.comBrian OrndorfMuch like David Arquette's acting career, the film is often unbearable and rarely shows competence, but still remains an antagonistic curiosity that can't be easily denied.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)Jeff ViceIt's sort of fun -- at least if you're someone who has a taste for gory slasher flicks.
Sci-Fi Movie PageJames O'EhleyA serial killer wearing a Ronald Reagan mask is killing off hippies at what must be the most under-attended music festival ever . . .
New York Daily NewsElizabeth WeitzmanThe rambling story attempts to turn the genre on its head, but it ends up giving in to every slasher cliché (Arquette himself plays a backwoods redneck). The acting ranges from abysmal to barely adequate.

VODzilla.coAnton BitelDavid Arquette's debut is a so-so slasher elevated by its unexpected (but eventually overworn) political mask.
Boxoffice MagazineJay AntaniIneptly written by Arquette and Joe Harris, The Tripper is a carnival of cretins doing and saying one ass-headed thing after another.
