Antagony & EcstasyTim BraytonIt's not very good in an objective, universal sense. As a Joe D'Amato film, it's the next thing to a masterpiece.
User ReviewGordon TANTHROPOPHAGUS - THE BEAST Anthropophagus -THE BEAST The titular main character is a The Consummate MAN-EATER (an EATING-MACHINE, an ANTHROPOPHAGUS)-he even ends-up gorging upon his own intestines by the film's end. Anthropophagus EATS his Son; Anthropophagus EATS his Wife; Anthropophagus EATS almost Everyone living in the Grecian island Village; Anthropophagus EATS a swimmer; Anthropophagus EATS The Swimmer's Boyfriend; Anthropophagus REACHES UP the Pregnant Woman's uterus; Anthropophagus PULLS-OUT the Pregnant Woman's Fetus; Anthropophagus EATS the Pregnant Woman's fetus; Anthropophagus EATS The Pregnant Woman; Anthropophagus EATS The Pregnant Woman's Husband; Anthropophagus EATS Anthropophagus' Own INTESTINES. ANTHROPOPHAGUS THE BEAST is a true MAN-EATING MACHINE (again, sigh, an ANTHRO-POPH-AGUS. The Fetus is actually a skinned-rabbit drenched in blood; when I first saw the uncut fetus-ripping scene, it looked to be so gory it seemed as though it would be considered por ... no ... graphic: GROOOSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! Directed by Joe D'Amato(aka Aristide Massaccesi) Starring George Eastman (aka Luigi Monteforie) Even though most "mainstream" Americans think that ALL foreign Horror Movies "lack" . . . no AMERICAN horror movie has featured a guy eating a woman's fetus before. I mean: "Mainstream" Americans read Magazines like The New Republic, The Nation, TIME, NEWSWEEK, they watch CNN and/or listen to NPR . . . But none of The Media Americans are exposed to mention films like ANTHROPOPHAGUS that genuinely take HORROR to a greater extreme. Sometimes I think of AMERICA as "The Iron Curtain" . . . NEVER are films such as Anthropophagus (also known as THE GRIM REAPER), Cannibal Apocalypse (aka INVASION OF THE FLESH HUNTERS), INCUBO NELLA CITTI CONTAMANATA (aka NIGHTMARE CITY aka CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD) discussed on NPR (National Public Radio) or CNN or in Entertainment Weekly and yet AMERICA seems to pride itself as being some kind of Supreme Country of Political and Moral Correctness while totally ignoring the goings-on beyond its borders. For instance, someone wrote that TRUE BLOOD definitively features VAMPIRES of the 21st Century; an American journalist made that statement about a tv show produced here in America. "The Twenty-First Century" is occurring ALL over the world, yet somehow an AMEICAN TV show suddenly becomes the international precedent in gauging VAMPIRES of the 21St Century. So, the argument could be advanced to support that, because some American Journalist never mentions ANTHROPOPHAGUS that Anthropophagus isn't legitimate because an American never mentioned it. ---Even though Media Blasters' DVD is a definitive-commercial release of Anthropophagus, the MIDNIGHT VIDEO video-cassette that runs the AMERICAN-language soundtrack (there are both English and American soundtracks) over the French-Print of SAVAGE ISLAND remains my favorite because the Media Blasters print eliminates the sound of the fetus' cry when its being ripped-out by ANTHROPOPHAGUS . --the soundtrack is destabilizing: trite; it uses a classical-music Russian "polka" (entitled: Padre Snaturato for its main-title sequence . Anthropophagus is one of the most disgusting movies ever made and so is CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST yet both movies have the lamest music: RIZ Ortalini's score for Cannibal Holocaust sounds like 1980s Elevator-MUZAK. (most people reading this don't know what muzak is, I'll bet; Muzak is a system of music relegated to department stores orchestrated to encourage people to shop . . . I used to think it was the radio playing in department stores but its actually a MUZAK broadcast system) Even though Everybody (especially the 30-million Americans who consume American-media) would say ANTHROPOHAGUS THE BEAST is too disgusting and would probably ignore it, I LOVE IT! To me, HORROR MOVIES are like HUGE ROLLER-COASTER RIDES with loops and twists and turns to TOTALLY FUCK-UP your perception of the world for around 90 or so minutes . . . Hey, I grew-up (sort of) in our family's funeral home (scrubbing the morgue, taking trips down to the Medical Examiner's Office to get bodies out of the giant refrigerators of "unclaimed" bodies) . . . To me most Americans seem too PUSSY about dealing with The Macabre and Gruesomeness and stuff . . . everyone needs to take a trip to their local metropolitan Medical Examiner's office to see stuff never discussed on/in stupid-NPR, The Nation, The New Republic, TIME, Newsweek, CNN, et. Al. See Anthropophagus; Discuss Anthropophagus; Demand that Professional Film Critics review ANTHROPOPHAGUS. Anthropophagus must be seen; Anthropophagus must be loved; and Anthropophagus must be appreciated for the HORROR CLASSIC it still remains as being today.
User ReviewDave BThe perfect slasher film. The Italians at the time of this release where mainly known for three things: Giallo, ultra gory Zombie flicks or shocking Cannibal features. While the slasher genre was taking off in the US thanks to the success of Halloween and Friday the 13th it was time for Joe D'Amato to step in and show the world the Italians can deliver slasher greatness too. The amazing island location and gore scenes are what make this so special to me. Damn! The taking of a fetus from a pregnant womens womb and then the eating of it by the killer near the end was superb. It is definitely one of those WTF moments in film. Man, he doesn't cut her open to get to it he actually shoves his hand up her snatch and pulls it out! Every genre fan has got to see this early 80's classic.
User ReviewNigel MWhile admittedly this is by no means a film for everyone fans of Italian genre film of the 70s and early 80s should appreciate the pacing of this sick little puppy of a film. The major shock final segment was the result of a discussion between the writer and star George Eastman and director D'Amato about what could be the sickest thing they could put in a movie- but while its all pretty sick D'Amato trumps this with Buio Omega and Emanuelle in America.
User ReviewScreen NAlthough this movie is technically terrible, the things that make it stand out are George Eastman's performance as the monster, and the uncanny creepy atmosphere of the film. Definetely in the upper echelons of depraved Italian cinema.
User ReviewChris SFlat out 5 stars for the visceral italian style gore in the vein of Dr. Butcher M.D. and Fulci's Zombi. Joe D'Amato lets loose his exploitation, world wide banned masterpiece with comic book blood, shaky cameras, a skinned rabbit along with one forced abortion you have to see to believe. The backstory of the title creature is told through one meager backstory but it is enough to set your teeth on edge. The two disc uncut edition can be picked up for about 15 bucks. The special features are nothing to orgasm about, but if your a film fan/freak like me the extra tidbits delivered by the late D'Amato on the origin of the film are interesting enough. Worthy of mulitple views.

User ReviewJames WGreat Italian movie. Full of atmosphere. Features some good lashings of grue aswell. Recommended.
User ReviewNils HI've been after this nasty piece of meat for ages, and I happened to find a cheap, really nice Italian version at a Sci-fi convention in Gothenburg! Low-buget as hell, but so atmospheric, gory and crazed that I can't help but to love it! The gruesome killer, the weird electronic soundtrack, the discovered bodies decomposing everywhere... And Tisa Farrow! Joe D'Amato can make great movies, so it's sad his career is so unstable.
