Ira Wells is an aged retired Los Angeles, California based private investigator who comes out of retirement when his former partner, Harry Regan, shows up on his doorstep with a bullet wound to the gut and dies. Ira wants to find out who killed Harry. Ira is contacted by another long-time acquaintance, Charlie Hatter, a self-proclaimed loser and Hollywood hack, about Harry's last case. Harry's client was Margo Sterling, a former client of Charlie's who is a flaky, penniless new-age actress, agent, and dress maker. She hired Harry to retrieve her missing cat, Winston, who is being held ransom by an acquaintance named Brian Hemphill, who stole Winston because Margo "borrowed" money. With all this, Ira has to figure out what would be the reason for someone to kill Harry.

Washington Post - 10/10 by Kenneth TuranThe Late Show has the grace to allow us to see the craft and competence that remains in [Wells].
Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN) - 10/10 by Bob BloomCarney and Tomlin make a fine odd couple in this tip of the hat to old-time detective thrillers.
eFilmCritic.com - 6/10 by Scott WeinbergAn odd and sneakily enjoyable little flick. Tomlin & Carney make a great pair.
Spirituality and Practice - 6/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatThe Late Show is a detective flick that modestly delivers more than one expects.
User Review - 10/10 by Allan CWriter/director Robert Benton is someone who absolutely has my number and I'm a huge fan of everything he does, from "There Was a Crooked Man" and "Bonnie and Clyde" to "Nobody's Fool" and "Twilight" (the Paul Newman film, not the lovesick vampire movie), I love all of his films. In this one, Benton presents a charming revisionist detective film with broken down detective Art Carney being hired by kooky Lily Tomlin to find her cat. Like most old detetive stories, a simple missing person (or cat) case turns into something much more complicated. Carney and Tomlin are a terrifically mismatched pair. The supporting players are amazing. But most of all, Benton's dialogue and script are a spot on love letter to classic Hollywood detective pictures while at the same time subverting the genre tropes. This one is a must see for fans of classic Hollywood noir and/or 70s revisionist films.
User Review - 10/10 by Charles PIn a nod and wink to hard-boiled film noirs of old, actors Art Carney and Lili Tomlin make an amazing pair - eccentric, hilarious, and nothing short of brilliant.
User Review - 10/10 by Alan HOne of the most fun movies I can remember. Lily and Art are fantastic together.
User Review - 10/10 by Stephen CProduced by robert Altman and written and directed by Robert Benton this fim is suitably off beat gem and a fine homage to those great Film noirs of the 40s . Art Carney plays aging Private Eye Ira Wells a once great private eye of Hollywood's golden age now lumbered with a hearing aid and a stomach ulcer. Ira just wants a quiet life but when his partner winds up dead and flaky hippy Margo played by Lilly Tomlin asks to track down her stolen cat ,Ira is drawn back into a web of deceit and murder which harks back to some of his greatest cases. Altman and Benton both loved subverting genre cinema and its a really pleasure seeing Carney and Tomlin spark off each other as they get to grips with the plot. Bentons script is full of great lines and his direction is assured as he clearly enjoys directing great actors. The film reminded me of the Long Goodbye and its a film which deserves to be better known ,I for one think its a little masterpiece.
User Review - 10/10 by Jerard WI'm writing this piece at the same time I'm writing "Fargo" because in a very interesting way of how the nuiances and the interactions with the characters are primary and are more important than the twisting and curving plot, that personally I gave up trying to follow. It wasn't due to the twists being confusing, actually they all make sense in an odd way much like cetain jigsaw puzzle pieces that doesn't appear to fit, just seems to fit at the right time, Lily Tomlin's brilliant performance is a wonderful microcosm in this idea. Because much like life things that you don't expect to happen, happen and why they do you make the most of it and in some cases you run with it. The camera angles and colors are wonderful creating a 1970's film noir that is both familiar and dreamy and new at the same time.
