Movie Reviews

TV Guide Magazine - 8/10 by Ken FoxGoldberger, who made his debut with the similarly gritty and deliberately unpolished "Trans," tries to pull the novel's concerns to the surface, but much of its subtlety is lost. Giamatti, however, delivers yet another superb performance, turning what might have been a freak show into an unexpectedly moving experience.
The A.V. Club - 8/10 by Noel MurrayA fragile little movie, occasionally ridiculous, but with M. Night Shyamalan's "Lady In The Water," Giamatti proved that he can make even the weirdest material believable.
Compuserve - 7/10 by Harvey S. KartenThe principal human character warns more than once, "Don't look at The Hawk." That's good advice, film fans.
New York Post - 6/10 by Lou LumenickNot an easy movie to watch, and it's far from perfect - but it does have an artsy integrity and a fascinatingly intense performance by Paul Giamatti.
Village Voice - 5/10 by Nathan LeeI won't pretend it makes for a happy night at the cinema, and it may require a leap of faith to succumb to Goldberger's spell. But I leapt, and found it enthralling up to the point where this legitimately weird movie capitulates to the most conventional catharsis. I'd rather watch Goldberger fail than a hundred others succeed.
Chicago Sun-Times - 5/10 by Bill StametsGoldberger and Giamatti strain too hard for strangeness.
Film Threat - 5/10 by Pete Vonder HaarFor all the effort Giamatti gives in making George a convincing character, the movie itself, never quite gets off the ground. The feel is too deliberately peculiar, and Goldberger's detached style never gives us a reason to invest ourselves in anyone but George.
EmanuelLevy.Com - 4/10 by Emanuel LevyGoldberger's study of a troubled man's obsession with falconry is admittedly flawed and Giamatti's acting is self-indulgent, yet there's something truly independent about this film which now gets a second chance to be seen at the Cannes Film Festival.
Entertainment Insiders - 4/10 by Eric LurioIt's not exactly a one-man and a bird show, but it's as close as we're going to get.
Newsday - 4/10 by Gene SeymourThere's enough worthwhile labor expended, especially by the powerful cast, to make Hawk Is Dying difficult to dismiss, even when it's hard to take.
