Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsThe Gorgon myth does not fit happily into Transylvanian surroundings, and there are too many red-herrings indicative of the script's straining after horrific effect.

ESplatterSteve BiodrowskiThe Gorgon is an interesting addition to the ... pantheon of classic monster movies - a sort of tragic love story told as a Gothic fairy tale.

User ReviewGeorgios LGhoulishly-great Hammer monster flick with the always-superb double-whammy casting of Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing, here oddly with their usual roles switched--Lee is the hero, Cushing the villain. One of Medusa's equally hideous sisters, the titular Gorgon, has been rampaging throughout a small German town, inconveniently turning the local gentry into stone. Benign and erudite Professor Meister (Lee) tries to solve the mystery, while the village's stuffily-detached Dr. Namaroff (Cushing) seems to be involved in a cover-up. High on creepy atmosphere & eerie happenings, with a palpably-unsettling feel to all the ghastly proceedings. Wonderfully offbeat, with the beautiful Barbara Shelley in the title role.
User ReviewTori DIt's a mystery suspense fantasy tale that delivers. An excellent hook that doesn't stop as we're given an array of cast members and a variety of horror themes. James Bernard's score captures the essence of fantasy and horror perfectly, and Terence Fisher's direction is the only way this movie could've been so good. As well, it has one of the best climaxes of Hammer Horror that I've seen to date.
User ReviewKrista BThis is one of my favourite Hammer horror flicks. Boasting great performances (especially on Peter Cushing's behalf), a fantastically dreary atmosphere and a refreshing monster that turns its victims to stone, there's a lot to love about The Gorgon. Fast-paced, fun, appropriately cheesy and at times surprisingly dark, this is one of those movies that reminds one what Hammer horror is all about.

User ReviewStephen CBy 1964 Hammer films had really hit the ground running with its gothic horror films and director Terence Fisher became the resident in house genius for the next decade. Here Hammer deal with a Gorgon a figure from Greek Mythology who by glace alone can turn humans to stone. Fisher sets the film in turn of the 20th century Germany as the townspeople of a small town cover up the fact that the gorgon walks among them. The chief of these townspeople is Dr Namaroff played to perfection as always by Peter Cushing who is determined to keep the secret well hidden from prying eyes. Chef among those prying eyes are Paul Heitz who falls in love with Cushings assistant played by Barbara Shelley and of course the great Christopher Lee as Prof Maister. The film has plenty going for it most notably being the central performances and Fishers unfussy direction, and it should be stated is a director of real style and he should not be classed as just another horror film hack . Its good to know that Fishers best work is now higly regarded and this film ranks among his best.
