It's the early nineteenth century Washington. Young adult Margaret O'Neal - Peggy to most that know her - is the daughter of Major William O'Neal, who is the innkeeper of the establishment where most out-of-town politicians and military men stay when they're in Washington. Peggy is pretty and politically aware. She is courted by several of those politicians and military men who all want to marry her, except for the one with who she is truly in love. Because of her personal situation at the time, she, in 1828, becomes the unofficial first lady to help her old friend - "old" both in terms of age and length of time - Andrew Jackson, who has just been elected President of the United States. Jackson and Peggy have the same political outlook, where the union of the states is paramount, especially when many states see their rights as being more important than the union. Jackson had a rough ride during the election in large part because his wife, Rachel Jackson, was seen as a pipe smoking hayseed, unfit to live in the White House. On her deathbed, Rachel asked Peggy to take care of Jackson. Peggy, as unofficial first lady, gets as rough a ride as Rachel did, because of her own marital status and the undue influence she may assert over Jackson. Because of her relationship with Jackson, Peggy has to decide which of the conflicting issues of her political convictions, being with the man she truly loves or respectability is of greatest priority in her life.

EmanuelLevy.Com - 6/10 by Emanuel LevyThis MGM fictionalized historical drama tries but doesn't always succeed to be a good star vehicle for Joan Crawford (as Peggy Eaton) as well as a biopic of President Andrew Jackson.
User Review - 10/10 by Ashley HThe Gorgeous Hussy is an incredible film. It is about President Andrew Jackson's friendship with an innkeeper's daughter which spells trouble for them both. Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, and Robert Taylor give excellent performances. The screenplay is well written. Clarence Brown did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. The Gorgeous Hussy is a must see.
User Review - 10/10 by Jason TI found the human plot-lines in this film to be very intriguing and the acting was also great. Joan Crawford gave a great performance, and she looked amazing throughout the entire film. I also enjoyed seeing Joan play a more vulnerable, innocent character. I really didn't pay particular attention to the opening credits of the film and was delighted to see Jimmy Stewart show up in the film. I thought his small parts in the film added a lot of flair. I really feel Lionel Barrymore should have received more acclaim for his performance of Andrew Jackson. Granted, the historical aspect of this film is skewed and written totally for dramatic affect, I still feel his performance was strong. Overall, I really enjoyed the film, and I wish there was an actress today that could carry such a presence as Joan Crawford brought to every one of her films.
User Review - 6/10 by Nicola MI was expecting so much more from this film with an amazing cast and an interesting story (in the beginning) but it failed to impress me. Joan Crawford looked out of place and somewhat confused in some of the scenes. While the mens' character were basically dying off, one by one in the movie. Jimmy Stewart also looked like he didn't belong in the film with the way he had portrayed the character. Franchot Tone, Melvyn Douglas, Robert Taylor, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, and Lionel Barrymore may be excellent actors in their own right but putting them through this was embarrassing. They could have done so much more to this film than what they did.
User Review - 6/10 by jay nThe acting is really, really amazing. Too bad the rest of the film plays with history like a Choose Your Own Adventure book.
User Review - 6/10 by Lee Anne WJoan plays a sort of 1820's Pamela Harriman, a Washington D.C. woman whose power and opinions rattle the people around her. Lionel "Old Man Potter" Barrymore plays her friend and mentor Andrew Jackson, Melvyn Douglas is the jerk she loves, Robert Taylor and Franchot Tone the nice guys she marries. Her costumes are beautiful, and actually make occasional attempts to be period accurate. Joan herself looks like a china doll. Jimmy Stewart appears (and looks completely ridiculous) briefly. I prefer a "modern" Joan.
User Review - 4/10 by Jade BJoan was miscast and the storyline just plods along....
