Movie Reviews

Cinematical - 9/10 by Kim Voynar... a richly complex tapestry of culture, idealism, love and freedom.
Jerusalem Post - 8/10 by Hannah BrownThe plot may sound familiar, but director/writer Dror Shaul makes it fresh with his vivid and often bitterly funny depiction of the film's setting, a kibbutz in the 1970s.
Boxoffice Magazine - 8/10 by Shlomo SchwartzbergSubtly directed and flawlessly acted, Sweet Mud packs a genuine punch.
EmanuelLevy.Com - 7/10 by Emanuel LevySundance Jury Award Winner: Though grounded in a particular locale, Israeli kibbutz in 1974, this disturbing coming-of-age tale also serves as an allegory about the clash between "deviant" individuals and a system that emphasizes "health" and conformity
User Review - 10/10 by Christina PWhat a well-written movie! The director showed his creativity even within the first few seconds, with the display of the beginning film credits. Well, I guess they wouldn't have chosen a shabby film to open the SF Jewish Film Fest. It also won an award at Sundance. This Israeli film is mostly in Hebrew but also French and English. Dror Shaul brings spunk and creative wit to what otherwise could have been seemingly boring life on a kibbutz. The plotline is simple, but the characters are rich and well developed and the cinematography is excellent. He really humanizes the characters, which helps you relate even if their way of living and societal norms are completely foreign to you. The ending left me feeling a bit depressed, though it did give a hint of hope for the possibility of a cathartic ending to the story.
User Review - 10/10 by Cheryl Tbeautiful and touching. filled with images that will become embedded in your memory. highly recommended.
User Review - 10/10 by Nemanja VShame this film got tucked away into a 'Jewish Film Festival' which only Jewish people ever go to, apparently, because this is an AMAZING film. The best thing I've seen so far this year.
User Review - 10/10 by Private UMy friend Dror Shaul's ode to kibbutz life in the 1970's is psuedo-autobiographical and very poignant. He shows some of the good and a lot of the bad that took place during that time and in particular focuses in on one boy's experience and his troubled mother. Well worth watching to get to know more about Israel and kibbutz life. Won the Crystal Bear prize in Berlin and the Audience Award in Sundance 2006.
User Review - 10/10 by Liat KOne of the best if not the best Israeli movie ever made. It is a universal theme in that children and adults clash and meet here in one of Israel's most problematic scenarios - the Kibbutz.
User Review - 10/10 by Rachelle PA bildungsroman where a young boy comes to understand his world of the kibbutz and his mother's depression. The film has powerful acting, a strong mix of characters, and a tone that moves gracefully between humor and seriousness. Overall, a wonderful movie.
