Globe and MailStephen ColeA 1930s-style, boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl songfest. With sticks, skates and a puck.
Reel Film ReviewsDavid Nusair...a well-meaning yet utterly misguided effort...
Jam! MoviesJim SlotekThis over-the-top, deliberately campy take on the national sport, featuring Olivia Newton-John as a hockey mom, is exactly what it sets out to be, for better or worse.
User ReviewRobin vOne of my personal favorite films of the year. People should really give this charmfest a chance. I couldn't say that it put's hockey to shame at all. It actually made me want to watch it more and it's ineresting how this was made. It's not what youwould expect going by the trailers. It's actually very well done and maybe my score for this is a bit high, but I couldn't help but love everything about it. My only complaint is the 4 or so one-liners from Nelly Furtado.
User ReviewLori RLove it! Love the style of the music, and I didn't find any parts were particularly forced. The 'love' aspect of it I found wasn't in there just so that they could say it was there, but rather it played an important role without overshadowing the entire plot. Loved it. :D:D
User ReviewCorey R'Score: A Hockey Musical' is exactly what its title suggests: a musical about hockey. And if you are thinking, that sounds like the corniest musical ever, featuring probably the lamest songs ever, you would be right. Yet it is utter campy fun, and I have possibly never had as much pure, brainless fun watching a movie. Being set in my home city of Toronto, with a storyline centered around my favourite sport, and a song called "Hockey: The Greatest Game in the Land", plus cameos by Walter Gretzky, Nelly Furtado, and Theo Fleury, all adds up to one super unique, super awesome movie
User ReviewZia KThis was hysterical. Funny, well-acted, just a great way to kill some time. I really enjoyed it. Lyrics like 'You're making a mistake, his tongue and saliva I did forsake' ... are *funny*. That's humorous! Geesh. Even hockey can be poked fun of. I can believe, however, that the hockey games are bogus -- I know nothing of hockey but do about music and can attest that the music-playing scenes were ridiculous, stands to reason the hockey was too. But it's OK, everything doesn't have to be realistic. This is a musical, for crying out loud: it *is* ludicrous; that's the point. eh?
User ReviewAdrien GIt's fun, light, and very Canadian. Lots of wonderful Canadian celebrity cameos.
User ReviewKimi GGonna start off by saying I'm Canadian and I'm totally biased. In actuality though it wasn't a terrible movie, if you like some grade A Canadian cheese then you'll love this film. The singing at times isn't the greatest but to be honest you won't really care because the lyrics are adorably quirky; as well the dancing in hockey garb is quite amusing. The fact that Olivia Newton-John is a crazy mother and Nelly Furtado plays a crazed hockey fan are just the icing on the cake for this movie. Also gotta love me some George Stroumboulopoulos! Overall I'd say if your Canadian you will probably find this movie amusing. If you're not but you have a good sense of humor and you like movies that aren't Hollywood grade then you might find this enjoyable. I will say that if you're not Canadian you might have trouble understanding the satire.
User ReviewChristopher SPure Canadian Fun. Some of the songs are really good, and I find myself whistling along with everyone else on the home ice.
