User ReviewAmber MPre-Civil War film starring Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn.
User ReviewAdam ZCurtiz was probably only concerned with putting on an exciting show- which he does- but there are other things here that should be admired. Errol Flynn is a heroic Jeb Stuart, Ronald Reagan fits in comfortably as Custer (there is no indication that he will eventually become the Indian-slaughtering general that he eventually became) and Olivia de Havilland is gorgeous as always, even though her role is pretty thankless. Some stunning sequences, most notably the raid on Harper's Ferry at the finale, make for good entertainment. But what distinguishes this movie from any other is Raymond Massey's portrayal of John Brown. Even though the filmmakers clearly make him out to be the antagonist, they do try to humanize him and defend his intentions, even though they condemn his actions. What's still bothering me is the part where the female slave tells Errol Flynn that she doesn't want freedom if John Brown is going to keep killing for it. To make a black woman say that in a movie seems wrong.
User ReviewCindy CBeen watching some of the old Ronald Reagan movies on TCM, and was able to catch this one from the beginning. It was a period piece of the fight against John Brown (think Harpers Ferry) starting with J.E.B Stuart and George Custer graduting from West Point - although doing a little research indicated that Stuart and Custer had a 7 yr age difference, so likely would not have graduated in the same year. It didn't matter. We didn't know the difference. We enjoyed and recommend this movie.
User ReviewVincent HNow THIS was a decent Flynn film, directed by Michael Curtiz. The kind of juicy historical fiction that everybody loves with plenty of cavalry charges, burning barns, treachery, and gunfights. The only part I thought was "eh" was de Havilland's part, grossly underplayed.
User ReviewJohn RThough an old black and white, I really enjoyed this movie. Fun. Neat classy old actors. 130919: Still loved it. Funny thing is, I read all these critic reviews below and find comments about accuracy etc. Weird. I don't watch most movies for historical accuracy. I watch for entertainment of which this film provides a great deal. Inspired me look up information on John Brown.
User ReviewKevin RHis bloody raids are terrorizing Kansas. John Brown is a revolutionary leader that spreads violence and death wherever he goes. Jeb Stuart, who is friends with George Custer, is dating Kit Carson (from the infamous Carsons), finds the country and his colleagues split in terms of Brown's actions. Rumors of a Civil War are sweeping across the country and these actions may lead to what ultimately becomes the war between brothers. "I'm the one engaged to her." "Well, who ain't?" Michael Curtiz, director of Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, White Christmas, Mildred Pierce, Virginia City, Four's a Crowd, Captain Blood, and The Walking Dead, delivers Santa Fe Trail. The storyline for this picture is very intriguing and while predictable, it does contain several worthwhile subplots and interesting characters. The cast delivers swell performances and the cast includes Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Alan Hale, Raymond Massey, and Olivia de Havilland. "We've been delivering bibles with triggers on them." I DVR'd this picture because it starred the legendary Errol Flynn. He was solid in this movie but it was the characters that he interacted with that made the film truly interesting. The settings were also solid as were the shootouts. This isn't Flynn's best movie but it is definitely worth watching once and potentially worth adding to your DVD collection based on the historical storyline. "I don't want any trouble here, mister." "Then you better leave us alone." Grade: B
User ReviewAnthony CGood film, that depicts john brown for the mad man he really was that brought about the biggest waste of life in America history die to the civil war, however large parts of the film are inaccurate it is still a good film
User ReviewJim MRonald Reagan, Eroll Flynn, and Alan Hale. An interesting old western B-movie about the Harper's Ferry Raid. Not bad at all.
User ReviewKevin M. Walong w/ the always magnetic flynn and de havilland pairing, and costarring an unforgettable ex-president, this curious pre-ww2 piece about the pre-civil war (or "the wo-ah between the states!" as granny clampett used to quip) days is curiously and definitively southern in politics, altho that in no way detracts from the stirring action. max steiner contributes a rousing score, but raymond massey's john brown is the hot engine that drives this car.
