KDHX (St. Louis)Diane CarsonMake no mistake, the ugliness of violence and greed comes through a dark, savage story with an incredibly brutal conclusion.
CinePassionFernando F. CroceThe frozen setting heightens Corbucci's severity
Battleship PretensionDavid BaxWith the help of a typically stellar score from Ennio Morricone, The Great Silence is one of the prettiest, most thoughtful movies you'll ever see with a body count in the dozens.
The Young FolksGary ShannonCorbucci's terse, elemental and rugged direction compliment a world shook by corruption and evil, and plagued by treachery that's so pervasive it enfolds as powerfully through its cold setting as does its even colder characters.
User ReviewHollie HContains photography so beautiful that it cries for a bigscreen, and not only the outside shots of frozen plains and mountains. After watching it with only a memory of the plotline from a mind exploding viewing as a child made clear why it is one of the few true classics of the Italowestern genre. Beautifully subdued are the score by Morricone and Klaus Kinski as the ultimate A-hole.
User ReviewChris WSergio Corbucci's Django was great, but The Great Silence is even better. One of the darkest westerns I've ever seen, with Jean-Louis Trintignant as a mute gunfighter who squares off against a group of nasty bounty hunters lead by the always great to watch Klaus Kinski. The film's influence can clearly be seen in the likes of Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller, what with the snowy mountain village and people living out their existence in a wintry hell. An excellent spaghetti western with one of the most pessimistic endings I've ever witnessed.
User ReviewGael Da masterpiece! the best spaghetti western after once upon a time in the west.very, very dark.
User ReviewDeniz KThe snowy dream-like scenery and music... and the ending! Holy crap!
User ReviewSenor CSergio (Django) Corbucci's taboo-breaking 1967 spaghetti western is one of the most unusual and interesting westerns ever made. The bleak ending still packs an almighty punch.
User ReviewJackson STerrifically bleak. It's one of the first spaghetti's I watched and it still holds a lot of emotional resonance with me to this day.
