User ReviewJustin SWhat a beautiful little film. The early Bunuel, Man Ray and Duchamp films do nothing for me, honestly. But this film moves me very much. I imagine seeing it on the big screen with the right music would be kind of euphoric. Deren is definately in her own league, though, it's unfair to compare her to the well known surrealists or dadists. "Meshes of the Afternoon" is fantastic too, probably her most notable film, but this is better. They're both on YouTube, watch them!
User ReviewPrivate UA beautiful and so, so intelligent blend of dance and surrealism. Wonderfully composed shots, and intriguing use of frame speeds.
User ReviewChris SDefinitely my most favorite of her short films, it's a beautiful and eye-pleasing film with magical scenes such as the one where the heroine seems to be flying while they're dancing; there's really no need analyzing Maya Deren's films. Maybe I like this more than At Land and Meshes of the Afternoon because it's less surreal and more focused on what Maya Deren is really passionate about: dancing.
User ReviewEdgar CThe poetess confesses her soul out: she loves the art of dancing and the endless private emotional signals it stands for. You can see her clear and present femininity thoroughly and passionately. 99/100
User ReviewHis LI you-tubed (not a verb? don't care) this and played it with Johnny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood. That was a good move on my part, I think. The "party" movement is beeyouteeful.
User ReviewSimei Dthe party scene looks like a not so surreal allegory (I might be wrong). The way the human body is shown on the last minutes is really good.
User ReviewWut SDeren's experimental shorts fascinate me with their techniques-in-filmic-primitive appeal.
User ReviewJochen Wa work of passage - deren brings together her roots in surrealist avantgarde cinema with her interest in dance, cheoreography, movement - and melts them into a surprisingly coherent movie.
User ReviewEric RVery cool film that toys with time. Maya Deren infuses her two passions, avantgarde filmmaking with dance and choreography to make a very hypnotic experience.
User ReviewR.A. LWEB. Una obra maestra del vanguardismo. Es excepcional al usar ritmos y composiciones para inspirar al subconsciente. / A masterpiece of avant garde cinema. It's exceptional in using rhythms and compositions to inspire the subconscious.
