Movie Reviews

Chicago Reader - 10/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumA clarion call for freedom and collective action both hopeful and energizing, it qualifies as a generational statement as Rebel Without a Cause did in the 50s, but without the defeatism and masochism. Not to be missed.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 10/10 by Rick GroenUnlike "Heathers," a satiric treatment of teen suicide, Pump Up the Volume is passionately caring. It's a howl from the heart, a relentlessly involving movie that gives a kid every reason to believe that he or she can come of age. It appreciates the pimples and pitfalls of this frightening passage, the transit commonly known as adolescence.
Flavorwire - 9/10 by Jason BaileyAs a movie, 'Pump Up the Volume' is a lot like a teenager: at times unbearably self-important and pretentious (Nora's poems, good lord), yet undeniably, and admirably, earnest.
BrianOrndorf.com - 9/10 by Brian OrndorfSlater is Moyle's generator, powering the film through some sludgy melodramatics, and while his separation of Mark and Hard Harry is practically Kabuki theater, the effort is just wonderful.
ReelViews - 9/10 by James BerardinelliPump Up the Volume, in addition to presenting an engaging story, has tapped into a universal truth about rebels with causes.
Boston Globe - 9/10 by Joan AndermanWorking within the confines of the teen-age genre film, Pump Up the Volume succeeds in sounding a surprising number of honest, heartfelt notes.
Chicago Sun-Times - 8/10 by Bruce IngramRoaring into the microphone with all the passion he can't put into his life, Slater gives this movie what it otherwise so desperately lacks: a reason for being.
Washington Post - 7/10 by Rita KempleyIt's a howl from the heart, a relentlessly involving movie that gives a kid every reason to believe that he or she can come of age.
Mediasharx - 6/10 by Clint MorrisMuch more than a teen movie....an experience, and one you'll never forget. TURN IT UP LOUD!
Los Angeles Times - 6/10 by Michael WilmingtonBad teen film unredeemed by aspirations toward significance.
