Donnie Rose went to prison for beating a young man so brutally it left him handicapped for life. Nine years later, Donnie is out. He's a different man with only one place to go: back home to the same violent and racist neighborhood that created him. At the other end of town, the black community still wants revenge. The instrument of justice will be Ossie Paris, a devastatingly talented boxer who challenges Donnie to a match; a match Donnie's family and peers won't let him refuse. George Carvery has waited nine years to avenge his son's fate at the hands of Donnie. When finally they meet face to face, however, both realize they share a similar desire to overcome the past. As the barely contained racism boils to the surface, George and Donnie form a seemingly unlikely alliance. Their partnership makes them outcasts from both tribes, who will only be satisfied by blood in the ring. The two men get to know each other in the eye of a storm, knowing full well that their futures will be decided with the bell of the first round.

Movie Reviews

New York Times - 8/10 by Neil GenzlingerPoor Boy's Game is a movie built around a boxing match, but its most powerful scenes involve no jabs or hooks.
Shadows on the Wall - 8/10 by Rich ClineA bold script improves this drama about masculinity and bigotry in a small community. It also helps to have a terrific actor like Danny Glover on board.
Jam! Movies - 6/10 by Liz BraunThe film does not pull its punches, and though uneven, is compelling.
Reel Film Reviews - 6/10 by David Nusair...certainly marks a step in the right direction for filmmaker Clement Virgo...
User Review - 10/10 by Geoffroy BA canadian film set in Halifax, it's missing the glorious hollywood stupidity which is rampant these days. Not eye-candy, and not a waste of time.
User Review - 10/10 by Serena LConfronting, challenging and profoundly moving. Poor Boys Game pulls no punches and is successful in providing a riveting and consuming movie experience. Poor Boys Game was a complete surprise to me. Although the story centres around a boxing match, it is about people and relationships, anger, family and ultimately balance. It is one of those movies that, for days after watching it, has you turning over and examining different scenes for their hidden depths. The story is intelligent, thoughtful and allows you to form your own conclusions without the usual formulaic, Hollywood "would you like me to cut up your meat for you?" conclusions. The acting is subtle and understated. There are scenes with little or no dialogue, that speak volumes. There are a few violent/sex scenes that gave me pause, and that I would caution parents to think about before allowing teenagers to watch. For example, there is interaction and a sex scene between inmates in a jail cell. But on reflection, I believe these scenes are absolutely necessary to the film and provide a huge amount of insight into the characters, history, the society and the situation. It is not a 'pretty' film, but in my opinion, it is a great film and very enoyable.
User Review - 10/10 by Lee MI'm not much of a boxing fan. But the story for me. Wanna watch again.
