The space transport vessel "Hunter-Gratzner" carrying 40 people on-board crashes on a desert planet when the ship is struck in a meteor storm. There are only 11 survivors, among them are pilot Carolyn Fry (Who has assumed command after the ship's captain is killed), bounty hunter William J. Johns, religious man Abu Al-Walid, Antiques dealer Paris P. Ogilvie, runaway teenager Jack, settlers John 'Zeke' Ezekiel and his lover Sharon 'Shazza' Montgomery, and Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict. Marooned, the survivors discover the barren and hot desert-scape has sunlight from three suns. Not only must they find food and water and worry about Riddick, the survivors find themselves being hunted by the planet's flesh-eating alien inhabitants when the planet is engulfed in darkness, which happens every 22 years, as they emerge from underground to hunt and eat all signs of life. Fry and the survivors find Riddick is their best chance of survival, as Riddick has surgically-enhanced eyes that allow him to see in the dark as they set out to find a way of escaping from the planet and getting to an escape shuttle, before they all get eaten by the creatures on the surface.
Leave your thoughts about Pitch Black.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)Jeff ViceLogic is definitely not the strong suit of Pitch Black. But then, neither is consistent characterization, smart dialogue, originality, subtlety or any of the other benchmarks of quality filmmaking.
eye WEEKLYGemma FilesThe latest film from writer/ director David Twohy, a man whose career seems aimed at proving that low-budget genre-based entertainment can be just as inventive and character-driven as its big-budget competition can be lazy and boring.
One Guy's OpinionFrank SwietekUnder the circumstances it's not really fair to blame the actors, whose amateurishness seems appropriate to the material (although Diesel's stolid machismo is so over-the-top as to be pretty laughable).
Reeling ReviewsRobin CliffordThe derivativeness of the script keeps any tensions from building into any kind of scariness.
Palo Alto WeeklySarah Heim and David WeldBy no means an excellent movie, or even a reasonably good one, but it is much better than most of its sic-fi brethren today.
Movie HabitMarty MapesPitch Black is relentless in its integrity; it's lean and mean and it doesn't waste time.
CinemaSense.ComCornell & PetricelliEven those who shun the gripping effect of horror films might find Pitch Black a challenge worth taking on.
Screen It!Jim JudyThe dialogue and performances are flat when not laughably bad.
Portland OregonianShawn LevyBetween the tart dialogue, the compelling lead performances, the vivid violence and the stunning cinematography, it's complete and satisfying all on its own.
Empire MagazineDarren BignellThis is filmmaking that's lean, mean and (in Diesel) boasts one hell of a fighting machine.
