Myron persists and the doctor goes through with it. An enthusiastic audience observing the operation applauds the medical achievement and rises in a standing ovation. After the operation, Myron arrives in Hollywood as Myra Breckinridge (Raquel Welch) while in the rest of this movie, Myron pops up from time to time as Myra's alter ego. Myra goes to an acting academy owned by her uncle, Buck Loner (John Huston), a former cowboy star. The real reason for Myra's arrival is to claim her half of Uncle Buck's estate, to which she says she's entitled. Buck Loner stalls by giving her a job teaching the history of motion pictures. Buck Loner has several friends. One of them is Leticia Van Allen (Mae West), an ancient Hollywood talent scout. The sex-starved septuagenarian runs an acting agency "for leading men only".

Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)John BeifussLoaded with pop references and clips from old movies, it's like a bizarre comic precursor to 'The Dreamers'...
Chicago ReaderDon DrukerRaquel Welch's big chance is snatched away by Sarne's careless and unprofessional direction, and Rex Reed's self-parody is much too pat and easy.
International Press AcademyMichael SzymanskiIf you truly analyze this, it's a very bisexual scene, and it's a classic, and I was told by a film buff friend that it was considered an A-list movie at the time.

Kansas City KansanSteve CrumOutrageous casting & laughs do not a good satire make.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. Puccio...it's hard to imagine how a film could be any worse, yet Myra has a silly, chaotic, almost endearing quality about it that proclaims its own innocence.
Village VoiceAaron HillisOne might appreciate Anthology's all-new print -- with its epic sets and costumes, slumming icons, and unfocused meta-ambitions -- as the queer precursor to Southland Tales.
Filmcritic.comMark AthitakisThe film and its purported message are just like the monster between Welch's legs: A big fat fake.
VarietyVariety StaffThe film version of Gore Vidal's Hollywood-themed transsexual satire starts off promisingly, but after a couple of reels plunges straight downhill under the weight of artless direction.
