The Stranger (Seattle, WA)Andrew WrightIt's still easy to be wowed by La Chinoise's mastery of ideological back-and-forth as well as the pinwheeling sense of invention that constantly threatens to burst the constrants of the frame
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzRelevant at its theater release and when viewed some sixty years later.
New York PressArmond WhiteIt's shocking to see Godard bite the hand that admires him, but this is what makes the movie relevant and timeless.
Chicago TribuneMichael PhillipsMaybe Andy Warhol didn't make the quintessential Pop Art masterwork. Maybe Jean-Luc Godard did.
The SpectatorPenelope HoustonOnly Godard could make a film so theoretical and so waywardly, persistently about people. Only Godard, certainly, could make this film.
User ReviewAlex BA must-see (as historical document, cinematic masterpiece, and/or explosive agitprop).
User ReviewEdgar CPolitical alienation and brain-washing is the center of Godard's improvisatory, "metaflimic" masterpiece that showcases the implications of brainless theoretical fanatism before the stage of finding out that those "clear images" sought won't come out of the blue if such theory is not put into practice. The metaphysical merging of philosophy and alternate thought in the minds of these pretentious students juxtaposed with Godard's metafilm jokes clearly emphasize this point of madness: political sides can be questioned, but true politics are constructed from own actions with clearly defined purposes behind. Marvellous intellectual discussion. Very, very impressive, Mr. Godard! 99/100
User ReviewLuis Diego RGodard makes it clear we are watching a FILM. Political issues discussed and unveiled in a way that will prompt the viewer to question his or her own ideals.
User ReviewRyan HOne of Godard's best. A powerful commentary on the turbulent social and intellectual politics of 1960's France.
