Movie Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle - 10/10 by Peter StackFried Green Tomatoes is fairly predictable, and the flashback structure is a distraction, but the strength of the performances overcomes the problems of the structure. I especially liked Mary Stuart Masterson's work, but then I nearly always do (see her in Some Kind of Wonderful). And I enjoyed the vigor with which Jessica Tandy told her long-ago tale, about a woman not completely unlike herself.
ReelViews - 9/10 by James BerardinelliFried Green Tomatoes is a thoroughly enjoyable movie-going experience, replete with laughter, tears, triumph, and tragedy.
Common Sense Media - 8/10 by Heather BoernerStirring, sizzling serving of female empowerment.
Philadelphia Inquirer - 8/10 by Desmond RyanFried Green Tomatoes is a case of a film acted with such skill and conviction that glaring problems of narrative, pace and structure seem like minor slips.
Time Out - 8/10 by Colette MaudeMore dizzying than the jumps between past and present is the speed with which consciousness-raised Evelyn swaps caricatures, evolving from Frump to Fighter.
Chicago Sun-Times - 8/10 by Roger EbertFried Green Tomatoes is fairly predictable, and the flashback structure is a distraction, but the strength of the performances overcomes the problems of the structure.
Radio Times - 8/10 by Peter FreedmanEssentially a story about friendship between two pairs of women, then and now, it could be classified as an intelligent woman's picture, but this truly uplifting and gratifying movie can and should be enjoyed by all.
South Florida Sun-Sentinel - 8/10 by Candice RussellThe fine performances and worthy themes are sold short. There are two films here, neither one of which is as fully developed as it could be.
Baltimore Sun - 8/10 by Stephen HunterIt doesn't quite have the courage to face its own implications and so leaves the story that follows in a kind of blur apt to offend no one but equally incapable of moving anyone.
Los Angeles Times - 7/10 by Kenneth TuranWhile Fried Green Tomatoes often veers between being too pat and too vague, too obvious and too unclear, too much of the “I laughed, I cried” school of storytelling -- it still has a charm that stems from its vivid and unique characterizations.
