The New York TimesA.H. WeilerIt is loaded to the gunwales with screamingly funny scenes which, in several instances, are visual improvements on the play.
Village VoiceAlan BodianThe fact that the picture is seamlessly anonymous testifies to the power of star performances rather than to any directorial engagement. The acting is the only reason to watch it.
Film ThreatBrad LaidmanMister Roberts is a movie dedicated to anyone with a boring dead end job who wants to be a hero and has to decide whether to live honorably anyway.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThe success of the uninspired movie is a testament to star performances from the talented cast rather than to the film's directors.
The A.V. ClubGwen IhnatWith no battles and a setting that primarily stays on the U.S.S. Reluctant, Mister Roberts still captivates, aided by some shimmering dialogue already polished to perfection by the Broadway version, along with the renegade hijinks of the crew.
Chicago ReaderDon DrukerThe film is still hilarious, though time has dimmed the luster of Lemmon's hamming in favor of James Cagney's superbly psychotic commanding officer.
VarietyVariety StaffJames Cagney is simply great as the captain of the ship.
Empire MagazineDavid ParkinsonStill an expert mix of sentiment, comedy, patriotism and anarchy.
User ReviewAndy BThis is the film that started Jack Lemmon's successful film carreer. He never looked back after this. It's one of those films that can be enjoyed over and over again.
User ReviewNick KEveryone's good here and you can't beat the closing line. The merging of directors is seamless and Cagney, Fonda, Lemmon, and Powell(in his last film appearance) are terrific!
