Ricardo Tubbs is urbane and dead smart. He lives with Bronx-born Intel analyst Trudy, as they work undercover transporting drug loads into South Florida to identify a group responsible for three murders. Sonny Crockett [to the untrained eye, his presentation may seem unorthodox, but procedurally, he is sound] is charismatic and flirtatious until - while undercover working with the supplier of the South Florida group - he gets romantically entangled with Isabella, the Chinese-Cuban wife of an arms and drugs trafficker. The best undercover identity is oneself with the volume turned up and restraint unplugged. The intensity of the case pushes Crockett and Tubbs out onto the edge where identity and fabrication become blurred, where cop and player become one - especially for Crockett in his romance with Isabella and for Tubbs in the provocation of an assault on those he loves.
Leave your thoughts about Miami Vice.
Flick FilosopherMaryAnn JohansonYou don't 'enjoy' this movie -- you're enthralled by it.... [T]his is a complete reimagining that is resolutely of the moment, that doesn't deign to a single winking nod to the past.
House Next DoorKeith UhlichIn retrospect it is clear that the rapturous Miami Vice is the work Mann has been building to.
FilmJerk.comBrian OrndorfThe film is so visually vivid, Mann could almost get away with taking out the ham-fisted dialog completely and let the whole thing run silent.
Village VoiceScott FoundasMann has done something transformative with Farrell: The Irish actor has never had this much charisma and natural authority in a role, and as he navigates that gray area between Crockett's real identity and his fabricated one, revealing subtle fissures in the character's cocksure facade, he's fascinating to watch.
Cinema CrazedFelix Vasquez Jr.[Michael Mann's] remake of his own property is dull, cliché, routine, and pointless.
St. Paul Pioneer PressChris Hewitt (St. Paul)You could sum up Miami Vice in three words: drugs, betrayal, kidnapping. So why does it take the movie almost 2 1/2 hours to get everyone killed or behind bars?
New York PostKyle SmithMiami Vice isn't an action flick but a neo-noir: tough, quiet, moody and hard.
Film BlatherEugene NovikovThe star of Miami Vice is, of course, Michael Mann, whose manipulation of this material is by far the most compelling reason to see the film.
Toronto StarGeoff PevereMiami Vice isn't perfect, but it is perfectly mesmerizing.
The Coast (Halifax, Nova Scotia)Mark PalermoMore interesting for everything it isn't than for anything it is.
