User ReviewRuss BA real "sleeper" comedy hit of 1980! Walter Matthau is never better and funnier! This movie will grow on you quickly about a CIA Agent who refuses to be retired by a moron boss, excellent played by Ned Beatty! Great locations, great music and Glenda Jackson. GREAT MOVIE!
User ReviewChristopher SI love this movie! Probably my all time favorite comedy. Lots of clever banter between Matthau and Jackson really make this movie. And Ned Beatty plays the perfect anal bureaucrat foil to Matthau's everyman. If, you only like stupid funny movies, you might not get this movie. Extremely well cast, well edited and fast paced with terrific acting by Matthau and Jackson and Beatty in particular. 10/10 doesn't get any better than this IMO. A movie that doesn't rely on over the top special effects and action to keep you mesmerized and laughing. The early scenes in Salzburg are especially killer but great front to finish. I miss Walter!
User ReviewBubba MGreat acting, and great Mozart! This was lot of fun to watch. Good rapport between Glenda Jackson and Walter Matthau
User ReviewElizabeth TI have loved this movie since I was a child; it is Waltar Matthau in his essence, so subtly funny and an absolute joy to watch. Also some awesome lines - is the movie version of comfort food for me!
User ReviewCurtis DMr. Neame has crafted a beautifully funny spy movie in which nobody dies or even comes close to dying and Matthau is always one step ahead of the CIA. If this were a Coen Brothers film, the humor would have been blacker and the body count higher, like their recent "spy" film concerning a disgruntled spy and his memoirs. A great "meet cute" between Glenda Jackson and Matthau and great support by Waterston and Beatty, who incidentally is the only person in the film to drop the "f-bomb" thus making the film "R."
User ReviewKymberleigh RWithout a doubt, the funniest movie Walter Matthau ever made. The script is clever and the dialogue realistic and even witty at times. Matthau plays a CIA agent which the "Company" wants to retire to a desk job but who instead leads them on a merry chase through Europe and the U.S. thwarting their often arrogant determination to prevent his publishing a "tell all" book on international intelligence operations. I've enjoyed many of Matthau's movies, from The Odd Couple and The Front Page to Grumpy Old Men, and this one is still the one I watch the most often. If, as has been suggested, this is a movie that could never be made today, we should all be thankful it was made when it was.
User ReviewJerard WThis is a charming and light hearted spy game movie. Usually that would spell disaster however because of the lightness there are no special effects, dramatic action sequences and heart-stopping pacing, it makes up for all that by with wonderful writing and believable set-ups with Miles Kendig (played by Walter Matthau) outsmarting the CIA and it's head Myerson (played by Ned Beatty). What's a spy game movie with out a romantic interest and Isobel (played by Glenda Jackson) has perfect chemistry with Miles and his esteemed colleague Joe Cutter (played by Sam Waterston) looking on doing his job understanding the mind of his opponent while respecting his friend at the same time. These actors provide the essential piece of believability to this game of cat and mouse, without that Hopscotch would look like a movie that Leslie Nielson would do... very badly.
