EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyJust as disappointing as the other John O'Hara novel made into a movie that year, Butterfield 8 with Liz Taylor, but without that film's melodramatic juice, though Paul Newman is well cast as the ambitious, upwardly mobile man in moral crisis.
VarietyVariety StaffFrom The Terrace builds up to one big cliche.
The Retro SetNathanael HoodScintillates and wounds with the scale and ambition of a CinemaScope epic and the intimacy of an old school Hollywood weepie.
Creative LoafingMatt BrunsonSatisfying in many regards, this handsome soaper is nevertheless undermined by a script (by Ernest Lehman, no less) that doesn't flow as much as stumble forward.
Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumA tolerable (if interminable) piece of mediocrity from 1960.
The SpectatorIsabel QuiglyFew novelists film as disastrously as John O'Hara; From the Terrace has everything that makes for overblown filming: every giant cliche you can think of.
Film Freak CentralWalter ChawAn epic winker that uses, in its best moment, a rocking dinghy as a euphemism.
User ReviewPanayiota KI thought this movie was superb and I look forward to reading the novel. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were both equally amazing. The music score by the great Elmer Bernstein was also quite remarkable.
User ReviewJohn MFrom the Terrace is an excellent film. It is about an ambitious young executive who chooses a loveless marriage and an unfulfilling personal life in exchange for a successful Wall Street career. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward give incredible performances. The screenplay is well written. Mark Robson did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. From the Terrace is a must see.
User ReviewAndrew CNewman and Woodward are reason enough to watch this film, but the acting is top flight throughout.
