FilmLand EmpireAnton BitelMaybe not quite as 'out there' as El Topo or even Django Kill, but the mix here of good-natured jokiness & gravity (even depravity), along with strange excursions into the discourse of theology & gender, make 4 Of The Apocalypse a weird trip alright.
User ReviewJoey BIt has rape, torture, revenge, a peyote trip, an interesting story, and awesome direction by the great horror director Lucio Fulci. Oh, and its a spaghetti western.
User ReviewJeremy NLucio Fulci's masterpiece. One of the most unusual westerns I have ever seen with many classic scenes and a wonderful music score. Tomas Milian is cast against type as the sadistic bad guy Chaco and his convincing performance is one of the film's highlights.
User ReviewKalle NExcellent Film from the best director ever, Lucio Fulci.
User ReviewJens RI have seen many Fulci films, and they range from breathtaking, lyrical masterpieces, with astonishing technical wizardry (films 100 times the budget are most often not in the same league, when it comes to the sheer technical mastery (as well as the more lyrical, artistic aspects) to more mediocre (yet interesting) offerings like Conquest. This is the first Western I have seen from Fulci, although it does definitely have a spaghetti feel to it, he still does something truly original with the genre. Backed up by a fantastic, emotionally poignant script, a gorgeous score (which sounds kind of like 70s country western music) and amazing arid landscapes, this is a real corker! The story is strange and surreal, but never ends up feeling contrived. The love sub plot between the prostitute and the bounty hunter is actually truly affectionate and very sweet! Something I was not expecting from Fulci (yes, there has been love sub plots in his other films, but this is the first time i seen one which is not merely intended to generate sleaze and nudity, which, don't get me wrong, is wonderful as well! For those of you who only know Fulci as a director of stylish, psychologically charged giallos and/ or ultra gory zombie movies, this is well worth a look, you will fin out (like I did) that there is a lot more to this brilliant director than most people seem to think.
User ReviewSean LA very disturbing, very emotionally-charged late entry in the spaghetti western genre by Italian gore-maestro Lucio Fulci. The light-rock songs are a bit off-putting, but quailty nonetheless. Tomas Milian turns in his best performance as the vicious Chaco. This movie needs to be a lot better known and regarded.
User ReviewBurtonThis is possibly one of the finest spaghetti westerns ever made, and interestingly enough also one of Lucio Fulci's finest endeavors behind the camera ever. Four people on the wrong side of the law - Stubby the gambler, a pregnant prostitute, the town drunk, and a man who sees ghosts - barely survive a raid on the town they're all at, leaving them journeying to the next closest town. But along the way they encounter Chaco, a rogue who joins their group only to leave them for dead along the way. When Stubby heads off to find Chaco and bring his own justice, you can prepare for an amazing battle. This movie is highly recommended.
User ReviewJuuso LIf you are expecting a typical revenge spaghetti western, you'll be disappointed here. Instead you'll get a better than average story, marvellous cast, strangely positive and slightly surreal atmosphere, a killer hippie soundtrack - and that violent, sometimes bizarre, Fulci touch... More character than the action driven, this unconventional western is defenately one of the Fulci's best movies.
User ReviewConner RThis is to Spaghetti Westerns like Zombi 2 is to horror. It is just all over the place crazy. Between the peyote ritual, full frontal male nudity in the pouring rain at a graveyard and a Charles Manson gunslinger villain, this goes beyond what you might see coming. The hippie soundtrack is a nice touch. I always love a good Lucio Fulci movie to just assure myself that you can never explore enough in film. He really goes where no Italian film maker ever wanted to go.
User ReviewArthur HProvocative spaghetti western that follows four very different people as they cross the desolate plains together in search of a better life.
