Half-breed Keoma returns to his border hometown after service in the Civil War and finds it under the control of Caldwell, an ex-Confederate raider, and his vicious gang of thugs. To make matters worse, Keoma's three half-brothers have joined forces with Caldwell, and make it painfully clear that his return is an unwelcome one. | User ReviewHenrik HKeoma is easily in the top 3 western movies I've seen. It's not as captivating as Leone's two masterpieces, "The good the bad and the ugly" and "Once upon a time in West", but where it lacks the mood, it gains in the actionscenes and the story as a whole. The movie is about a half-breed man, Keoma, getting back home from the civil war. His family has fallen apart and the local town is now ruled by an asshole named Caldwell, who's prohibiting the use of medicines and making the people pay taxes 'bout everything you can imagine. Now it's up to Keoma to save the day and a local pregnant woman from her tormentors. It's kinda basic story, but it gets really "deep" after awhile and before you even notice, your armpits are sweatting and you're cheering aloud for Keoma. I'm gonna keep this one short 'cause I don't like telling too much about GOOD MOVIES, I expect you to watch them and make your own decisions. Keoma, you rule! |

| User ReviewBrody MJust flat out cool. It's extremely well made and culturally aware. What you might not expect is the originality of it. It's not just some mindless gunslinger film, it's more about racism in the west. Franco Nero is as good as he was when he started the genre a decade before. No, it's not Sergio Leone, but it's strangely close to something he would've done. Castellari clearly had a great feel for the genre so he was able to play around with expectations and stylization. There are some incredibly well done shoot-outs and a ton of well balanced action. I even love the bizarre theme song. Definitely in my top ten Spaghetti Westerns list. |
| User ReviewBenoît RIl y a tout ce que j'aime dans le western ici. De l'action, sans s'arrêter ou presque. Castellari va vraiment voir à gauche et à droite pour reprendre ce qui se fait de mieux et faire un western-spaghetti à sa sauce. Leone, Peckinpah ou Ford sont des exemples les plus probants. Le personnage de Keoma semble légendaire. La sorcière qui l'accompagne à chaque tournant important, à chaque endroit où il y a la mort mais qui semble veiller sur lui est là pour rappeler que nous ne sommes pas vraiment face à une histoire qui pourrait être vraie. C'est une forme de conte à la mode western. Les fusillades sont superbement bien rendues grâce à un montage ultra-dynamique mais utilisant aussi énormément les ralentis. Le montage est probablement l'élément le plus ingénieux du film. Permettant des moments incroyables comme quand Keoma se revoit enfant au moment où il est présent sur les lieux. Il y a aussi ces coupures, ces flashbacks qui interviennent à des moments inhabituels. La référence biblique est énorme. Keoma, une sorte de Messie que les gens ne veulent pas avoir. La scène de la roue, où le justicier est mis comme le Christ sur la croix est magnifique. Les décors et les plans larges aussi. La musique des frères De Angelis est en parfaite adéquation avec l'oeuvre, lui procurant même une aura supplémentaire. Totalement sous le charme. Rien ne m'a déplu, même dans les messages que le film tente de faire passer, avec un gars apportant la paix, s'interrogeant sur la guerre, rappelant que chaque homme, de n'importe quelle couleur, est libre. Et notre héros, notre Messie face à l'ignorance et la bêtise de la population repart, libre... pour ne jamais revenir ? |

Earie, spooky soundtrack, sand blowing in your face(or was that just the drugs?) and raw violence til the sun come up. Franco Nero is my hero! |
