Dirty Wars follows investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill, author of the international bestseller Blackwater, into the hidden world of America's covert wars, from Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia, and beyond. Part action film and part detective story, Dirty Wars is a gripping journey into one of the most important and underreported stories of our time. What begins as a report on a deadly U.S. night raid in a remote corner of Afghanistan quickly turns into a global investigation of the secretive and powerful Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). As Scahill digs deeper into the activities of JSOC, he is pulled into a world of covert operations unknown to the public and carried out across the globe by men who do not exist on paper and will never appear before Congress. In military jargon, JSOC teams "find, fix, and finish" their targets, who are selected through a secret process. No target is off limits for the "kill list," including U.S. citizens.

Movie Reviews

Willamette Week - 9/10 by Curtis WoloschukWith Dirty Wars, director Rick Rowley doesn't so much sugar the pill as caffeinate it.
National Post - 9/10 by Chris KnightLike a lot of modern political documentaries, we've yet to see the final chapter, which is yet to be written. But it's instructive to have a little more light shed on such history in the making.
Philadelphia Inquirer - 9/10 by Tirdad DerakhshaniDirty Wars is essential viewing for all Americans, conservatives and liberals alike. It's intense and depressing. It'll make you angry.
Seattle Times - 9/10 by John HartlBy emphasizing the human cost of the operation, Scahill and Rowling turn "blowback" into much more than an abstract military-political term.
Capital Times (Madison, WI) - 9/10 by Rob Thomas"Dirty Wars" becomes more than the sum of its facts, illuminating not just the secret wars but the emotional toll that trying to uncover them takes on Scahill.
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette - 9/10 by Philip Martin... though I have certain qualms about the way Scahill is presented in the film ... I cannot imagine that a more compelling film could have been made without his character carrying this dramatic payload.
Not Safe For Work Corporation - 9/10 by Eileen JonesYou become uncomfortably aware of scene-staging. How much re-enacting have we got going on here?... Once you become aware of it, this creeping subversion tends to gnaw away at the rest of the film.
Oregonian - 9/10 by Marc MohanAwkward title aside, the movie meticulously and powerfully lays bare the unexpectedly wide scope of activities that many in the current administration would surely prefer kept under wraps.
Christian Science Monitor - 9/10 by Peter RainerI wish Rowley didn’t so often dabble in standard movie-thriller-style stylistics, but his film is an exposé of practices that need – demand – exposing.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 9/10 by Rick GroenA remarkable documentary as important as it is compelling.
