Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonMost movies would ramp up the adrenaline to show the suspense-oriented ending, but Becker would rather emphasize the feelings behind these events. He shows Marie's face for long, potent moments, and that's all the drama he needs.
ColeSmithey.comCole Smithey[VIDEO ESSAY] Draped in the manners of fin de siècle in Paris, writer-director Jacques Becker's 1952 milestone of romantic drama is a snapshot of French social mores at the turn of the 20th century.
VarietyVariety StaffAn excellent recreation of a colorful French period.
Reno Gazette-JournalMark RobisonBecker turns what could've been a routine gangster flick into a minor gem with revealing camera work and smart twists.
User ReviewThomas PI loved this film! What a classic French noir from Jacques Becker. Simone Signoret absolutely lights up the screen. It is a tragic gangster story told beautifully and stylishly. I will definitely be checking this one out again, everything about it was just right in my opinion. Highly recommended!
User ReviewChristopher BOne of the most beautiful of movies, so elegant and masterfully composed that it barely registers that you're watching a tale of infighting between ex-cons, pimps, and whores. Signoret was never more gorgeous or deep, and Reggiani is an unorthodox but inspired choice as the instant love of her life. Not an instant of this film is misjudged - it's timeless.
Recomendo e mt!
User ReviewPrivate UA glorious evocation of la belle epoque in the poetic realist tradition of Marcel Carne's Les enfants du paradis (1945), Jacques Becker's Casque d'Or is one of the great filmic romances featuring star-making performances from Simone Signoret and Serge Reggiani as ill-starred lovers Marie and Manda. Having served as assistant to Jean Renoir during the 1930s, Becker bathes in the same nostalgic glow as his mentor's Une partie de campagne (1936). We are in the Paris of the Impressionists, the Paris of Renoir-pere, in which a carpenter, Manda, in falling helplessly for the stunning Marie, sparks an underworld tussle which ends on the gallows. Casque d'Or was released in the same year as Max Ophuls' similarly elegant evocation of late 19th century French society Le Plaisir but is not marked by the dry cynicism of the latter work. Becker's film is one of the masterpieces of the post-war, pre-New Wave period, soaring above the vast majority of films made during a period scathingly characterised by the Cahiers critics as the 'tradition de qualite''
User ReviewPavandeep SAn old-fashioned film that plays heavily on the story structure of 19th century themes like betrayal and dangerous and lost love both together. I found it highly enjoyable especially to see the acting, the actor Serge Reggiani did a fantastic job in portraying man who can never go straight. I also found that the simplicity of the story-line works by allowing fatal emotions to play through.
User ReviewBleak MSimone Signoret est super dans ce film ! C'est un film qui montre la belle époque mais aussi sa montre un amour intense ! Je l'ai adoree ! Un grand classic .
