After the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in 2009, there are a limited number of doctors left in the country who provide third-trimester abortions for women. AFTER TILLER moves between the rapidly unfolding stories of these doctors, all of whom were close colleagues of Dr. Tiller, and are fighting to keep this service available in the wake of his death. These four people have become the new number-one targets of the pro-life movement, yet continue to risk their lives every day to do work that many believe is murder, but which they believe is profoundly important for their patients' lives. AFTER TILLER shows them confronting harassment from protesters, challenges in their personal lives, and a series of tough ethical decisions.

Movie Reviews

Spirituality and Practice - 10/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatA sensitive and intelligent documentary about the compassion and heroism of four doctors.
The Playlist - 10/10 by Katie WalshAfter Tiller is not an important film just because of its political and cultural relevance, but because of its humane and compassionate approach to telling the stories of these doctors, their work and the women that they seek to help.
St. Paul Pioneer Press - 9/10 by Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)Simultaneously tough and compassionate, it's a fine addition to the debate.
Minneapolis Star Tribune - 9/10 by Colin CovertAny viewer with an interest in this issue, whether pro-life, pro-choice or agnostic, ought to see this heart-piercing report from the front lines.
Laramie Movie Scope - 9/10 by Robert RotenThis is one of the best films I've seen this year. The access to doctors, their staffs, patients and families is very impressive. It has a lot of emotional power and it plays the abortion issue right down the middle.
Film.com - 9/10 by David EhrlichThe human imperative informs every aspect of After Tiller, resulting in an unexpectedly warm film.
Variety - 9/10 by Alissa SimonWell contextualized and sensitively shot with extraordinary access, the pic reflects the personal, moral and ethical struggles of the doctors as well as their patients.
Village Voice - 9/10 by Alan ScherstuhlAs a whole, Martha Shane and Lana Wilson's wrenching, humane film is as convincing a brief as I can imagine in favor of that most controversial of all pregnancy-terminating procedures.
Los Angeles Times - 9/10 by Sheri LindenFilmmakers Martha Shane and Lana Wilson, whose profiles in courage are sympathetic but not adulatory, have crafted an absorbing, thoughtful report.
Indiewire - 9/10 by Eric KohnIn constructing its gripping overview, After Tiller maintains a generally straightforward roundup of talking heads, but its unassuming construction gradually generates an authoritative voice. Only once the arguments have been plainly established does the emotion truly take hold.
