A group of fat people from the Israeli city of Ramla is fed up with the sanctity of diets and the 'Dictatorship of the Thinness' of the diet workshop they participate in. They leave it and discover the world of sumo, where fat people like them are honored and appreciated. Through sumo they are connecting to themselves and to their fat body, each one in his own way. Herzl an obese guy, starts to work as a dish washer in a Japanese restaurant in Israel. Herzl is exposed to the world of Sumo through Kitano, the restaurant manager, who was a Sumo coach in Japan and escaped to Israel, after he got involved with the Yakuza. Herzl falls in love with the Sumo world and wants Kitano to be the Sumo coach of his obese friends that gave up their diet. "My Own Private Sumo" is a movie about the coming out of the closet of fat people and about their ability to accept their fatness and relate to their body through the world of sumo.

Movie Reviews

Seattle Times - 8/10 by John HartlWhile the story may take place in working-class Israel in the 21st century, rejection is universal. So are most attempts to come to terms with it. Still, there's more than a little novelty value in the choices its characters make.
Variety - 7/10 by Alissa SimonPart sports drama, part love story, this sweetly absurd tale of forlorn blue-collar guys pursuing a difficult goal... recalls audience-pleasing fare such as The Full Monty.
Toronto Star - 6/10 by Linda BarnardAn amusingly lightweight Israeli comedy about rebellious fatties who decide to use their heft for a greater purpose, A Matter of Size will have you ordering your popcorn with extra butter and refusing to feel guilty about it.
Boston Globe - 6/10 by Wesley MorrisWe're meant to like these men, and we do, more or less, but they've been simplified for easy digestion.
Reeling Reviews - 6/10 by Laura Clifford...it's gentle humor and band of underdogs will surely bring a smile. It's a unique cross-cultural comedy.
Jam! Movies - 5/10 by Liz BraunThe humour in A Matter of Size is somewhat puerile, but the film does cover important social issues in its own gentle way.
User Review - 10/10 by Dorene KDelightful and skillful acting, great storyline, and wonderful sense of humor make this film a great watch! Highly recommend!
User Review - 8/10 by Kelly PCharming in a funny and somewhat inspiring way. I liked it!
User Review - 8/10 by Mark PA very enjoyable and funny comedy out of Israel about four overweight men trying to find self-esteem ... learning to be sumo wrestlers. This is going to be remade for American audiences, so keep an eye out for it so you can compare.
