Classic Film and TelevisionMichael E. GrostClassic Western that is one of the high water marks of the American cinema.
Slant MagazineFernando F. CroceThe effect is not one of (pre) post-modern nudging, but a questioning of the conventions through the director's humanizing gaze.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzA terrific Western especially for those who take their oaters seriously.
User ReviewKevin OOne of the best westerns around, but little-known. Superb acting by all, especially by Lee Marvin's sexy character.
User Reviewjay nMy goodness. The first Boetticher movie I've seen and it definitely won't be the last. The scene in the wagon is brilliant.

User ReviewJose VAn utterly indispensable Western, if one is so inclined to the genre. This one is known by few --- but inevitably, loved by all who see it. Extraordinary performances throughout --- AND it's a BUDD BOETTHICER Film (those in the know will know what THAT means). Priceless!
User ReviewW. WRandolph Scott and Lee Marvin turn in tremendous performances in this highly underrated Western. One of Budd Boetticher's best films.
User ReviewKevin RThe perfect western. It has everything that makes a western GREAT. Carried by the smooth and charismatic Randolph Scott, this is not an original revenge flick, but so well written with a very nice series of plot twists it streams into a very enjoyable story and perfectly acted by all Lee Marvin defines the word villainous sociopath especially with his guns worn like that (as he found out they don't work so good that way). Even the romance is good, albeit a bit goofy, with a true Hollywood ending.
User ReviewTony RAndrew Sarris described Budd Bouetticher as possessing a "moral certitude" in his movies. That nails it. Good vs. bad; white hat vs. black hat (literally); morally certain vs. morally confused.
