Farmer and family man Johnny Cobb moonlights as a two dollar a month Sheriff with a homemade badge in the quiet little town of Firecreek. When a gang of freebooters passes through, their leader Larkin, who is suffering from a minor wound, agrees to spend the night. The gang members prove to be vicious, sadistic sociopaths who take advantage of the frightened townspeople, humiliating them for their own perverse amusement. Although Larkin disapproves of their behavior, his leadership role is tenuous, and he is reluctant to test it by exercising control over his men. The mild-mannered Cobb faces a series of challenges from the gang's antisocial behavior. Things come to a head when Meli, an Indian woman with a mixed race child, incurs an attempted sexual attack by one of gang. Arthur, a simpleton stable boy, comes to her aid and accidentally kills the attacker. Cobb locks up Arthur to keep him safe, but when the Sheriff leaves town to visit his wife, who is struggling in labor, there is no one to control the gang. Cobb decides the time has come to act.

The New York TimesHoward ThompsonFirecreek is a good, sturdy and occasionally powerful little Western.
The Observer (UK)Philip FrenchThe tension we need to draw us into the story isn't there; things move at too leisurely a pace, and the movie, like the Jimmy Stewart hero, has to be dragged into the excitement against its will.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyA mediocre Western, elevated by the star power of Henry Fonda (as the villain) and Jimmy Stewart
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzIt's a B-western passed off as an A-western.
User ReviewAshley HFirecreek is one of most underrated great westerns ever because it doesn't have a lot of flash. It's just gritty and tense. I think this is best small-town-sheriff-gets-pushed-too-far western. Henry Fonda proves he is better when he's bad and Jack Elam is a plus. The real surprise is Gary Lockwood in a powerhouse performance of pure evil. James Stewart of course is the sheriff. The final shootout is great, pitchfork and all. Firecreek isn't for all tastes, but I recommend it, especially for noir-type fans.

User ReviewCaitlin FI really loved this film Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda were the best playing in the opposite sides when Henry Fonda plays Bob Larkin who was a vicious bad cowboy that wanted to take over the town with his gang and Jimmy managed to take him and his gang out!!!! ð~
User ReviewBronson CI'm seeing the word 'mediocre' when this film is described. Let's just say this, there is NOTHING mediocre when you bring together a cast like this; Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Dean Jagger and Jack Elam...it's a classic western! Stewart shines here...BIG.
User ReviewAnis TThis film wasn't liked too much by alot of people, when first released. They all thought that it was an attempt to remake the classic western High Noon. Which it does have the same plot, but I absolutely loved this one. The plot revolves around this town getting invaded by a pile of crooks: Henry Fonda, Jack Elam, James Best.....etc. And Stewart, being the sheriff of the town, tries to stop them. Good direction, and acting. This film was one of the better westerns made in the late 60's. Check it out.
User ReviewHarim K1968 western with Fonda and Stewart facing off as villain and hero. Much the same plot as in Jimmie Stewart's early classic, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Inger Stevens is an old flame of Henry Fonda who saves the day in this thriller that builds a slow but sure exciting end in a small town of the west. Lots of great wind sounds and dust too. Thumbs up for this western with all the great supporting cast as well. Not a waste of your time, which is my criteria for a good movie.
