The New York TimesFrank S. NugentNot merely a natural and straightforward biography, but a film which indisputably has the right to be called Americana. Henry Fonda's characterization is one of those once-in-a-blue-moon things: a crossroads meeting of nature, art, and a smart casting director.
Antagony & EcstasyTim BraytonJohn Ford produced greater films, but perhaps not a single one that was more perfect or more Fordian... [there's] a confidence of purpose and a unity across all the elements of its creation.
Las Vegas Review-JournalCarol ClingThe Ford-Fonda team delivers another classic.
The A.V. ClubNick SchagerA rose-tinted look at American history, certainly, but still a very entertaining one.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonOne of John Ford's most perfectly realized works, an effortless jelling of his bawdy sense of humor, his patriotism, his mythical sense of history and his gorgeous, cinematic poetry.
Filmcritic.comChristopher Nullinteresting from a historical perspective, if it's not quite the masterpiece some adherents have made it out to be
Scene-Stealers.comEric MelinModern audiences will no doubt find the trial portion of the film quaint, but Fonda plays Lincoln with such calm, centered confidence that it's also a refreshing change of pace from the aggressive histrionics of today's cop/legal thrillers and TV shows.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThis just might be Fonda's most spellbinding performance.
User ReviewEduardo CHenry Fonda's portrayal of Lincoln is legendary, greatly aided by makeup, one feels the presence of Lincoln immediately upon seeing him. You can feel the breath of Lincoln all over this film, only slightly marred by it being a work of fiction. Still, one can easily visualize Lincoln behaving exactly this way had he been placed in this situation. The story is jaw-dropping good and will invariably force one to backtrack and watch a certain scene all over again.
User ReviewSerge LYoung Mr. Lincoln is an incredible film. It is about the early life of the American president, Abraham Lincoln. Henry Fonda and Alice Brady give excellent performances. The screenplay is well written. John Ford did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. Young Mr. Lincoln is a must see.
