Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsAs a plea against capital punishment, the producers' conception of their drama seems to lack passion, and this makes it difficult to assimilate the film's emotional climate.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThe downbeat film doesn't really make a great argument against capital punishment, which was its intention.
User ReviewElaine JBritish Classic of the 50s, loosely based on the Ruth Ellis case, J Lee Thompson's film is a worthy, anti-capital punishment statement. The film jumps between Dors in prison and her looking back through a series of flashbacks to reveal the events that led to her crime. Bleak, dramatic and even heart breaking, this movie, more than any other, confirmed Dors' status as an actress of merit. Whilst the film was sold on Dors's sex appeal, for the most part, she is stripped of all but a little make-up and she gives an incredible performance, showing a talent and range that make this stand out from anything else she ever did.
User ReviewTara HThis is an excellent British crime movie from 1956, the story of a woman condemned to death - loosely based on the case of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in England. J. Lee Thompson's direction is spare and unflinching, with an extraordinary lead performance from the often underrated Diana Dors. The rest of the cast is largely female, and the relationships that develop between the prisoner and her captors, notably Yvonne Mitchell, are both moving and unsettling. An intelligent, balanced take on the death penalty, a snapshot of its time and yet still highly relevant today.
User ReviewMark SAn underrated British crime drama that slightly resembles the real life case of Ruth Ellis, and shows Diana Dors was more than just a 'blonde bombshell' - she really could act too.
User ReviewFredrik GJ. Lee Thompson is decidedly underrated and that's the sad truth, and I'm talking now about his British films of the 50s, before he went to Hollywood and lost his way.
