Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertLike all great fables, it grows out of a particular time and place, but it takes its strength from universal sorts of feelings.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyDirected by and starring Streisant, this is a charming gender-bending fable, too bad the music is so undistinguished.
What Would Toto Watch?Christian TotoYentl is all about, who else? Miss Streisand. But her vast talents turn a gender-bending fable into a winner.
Common Sense MediaRenee SchonfeldRomantic folk tale retold with music and classic Streisand.
Bangitout.comJordan HillerWhile the movie is on target in terms of noble intent, so much about Yentl is self defeating, and the legendary ego of Streisand can safely be deemed the culprit.
User ReviewJanemarie CGreat movie. Great story, great acting, great songs.
User ReviewMarina NYentl is an excellent film. It is about a Jewish girl who disguises herself as a boy to enter religious training. Barbra Streisand and Mandy Patinkin give amazing performances. The script is well written and moving. Streisand also did a great job in her directorial debut. I enjoyed this movie because of the romance and drama.
User ReviewKaryn CI love this movie - Think Beauty and the Beast with Barbara at her best.
User ReviewThomas PIt took a second, later viewing for me to appreciate how good this movie is. While suspension of disbelief is required for Streisand's transformation, the romantic-spiritual-feminist themes are well-played out and emotionally satisfying. The fine music is less about being a 'musical' and more operatic in its integration into the story. Yentl has not aged in its appeal.
