Yanks Tanks is a first look at the phenomenon of classic American cars in Cuba. Like an exotic, endangered species, these colorful cars roam around this island paradise trapped in a 1950's time warp. As beacons of individuality in a sea of government conformity they represent freedom for those who own them. Owners who will do almost anything to keep them running. Seeing these old cars in recent films and photographs one wonders how they have maintained them after decades with no spare parts and an embargo by the United States. After repeated trips to Cuba, the Schendel brothers succeed in taking a close look into the underground world of Cuban cars, finding along the way a gallery of eccentric characters - the curators of the largest, living, automobile museum in the world.

User Review - 10/10 by Doc AAn look at the Cuba we never get to see or hear about. Truly resourceful people and some amazing craftsmen.
User Review - 6/10 by Bruno LChris Delbert recommended this to me a while ago, but I only got around to watching it now because I just installed the new speakers for the laptop. That's because the film has some very nice Cuban music, including a rap version of "Chan Chan" from Buena Vista Social Club at the end. This is a fun little film, probably moreso if you're into old cars. I'm not personally, but I enjoyed meeting the old characters who keep these 50+ year old cars on the road. It was also fun hearing a group of them talking about the system of "Cubanismo," in which supposedly illegal private businesses like theirs are actually what keep the whole Cuban system running day to day. 3 stars, or 3.5 if you're either Cuban or into old cars. 4 stars if you're both.
