When two college students, Sam and Thea, meet Coles at a party, their mutual attraction is immediate, leading to a passionate and awkward night together, and the onset of an intensely charged bond. As they continue to push the sexual boundaries of their friendship, however, they are tested by Sam and Coles' incipient romance and Thea's increasing recklessness, until the relationship dissolves amid a cloud of fear, resentment and mistrust. Eight years later they reunite. An animator for a high-profile ad agency, Coles now lives with Claire, his girlfriend of five years. Thea is happily married to Miles, with whom she owns a flourishing restaurant. And Sam has just returned to Manhattan after working in London where she recently broke off her engagement. Yet upon reconnecting, the three are drawn back into the complicated dynamic that defined their relationship from the start and are forced to confront the true meaning of commitment and love.

Movie Reviews

Philadelphia Daily News - 9/10 by Gary ThompsonThe more dimensions [Wright] adds to her character, the more silly and shallow the others seem to become.
EricDSnider.com - 9/10 by Eric D. SniderFeatures some of the least interesting characters in the world, complaining about their problems in a way that makes you stop wondering why people think Gen Xers do nothing but whine.
Cinema Crazed - 8/10 by Felix Vasquez Jr.By the numbers relationship drama saved only by Ruffalo's performance and presence.
Jam! Movies - 8/10 by Liz BraunXX/XY is a lovely film and very smart, and it's for grownups. That's a rare pleasure.
Newsday - 8/10 by Jan StuartRuffalo continues to be one of the most intriguing actors of his generation.
Denver Post - 8/10 by Vic VoglerXX/XY expresses and explores this universal yearning without becoming stuck in it. In this and many other respects, few movies are so mature and satisfying.
Toronto Star - 6/10 by Geoff PevereWith its talky and theatricalized depiction of cruelties mutually inflicted by financially comfortable good-looking young white people on each other, XX/XY at times recalls a slightly more full-blooded Neil LaBute movie.
Shadows on the Wall - 6/10 by Rich ClineBasically it's just a chick flick about people obsessing constantly over sex and relationships! But the performances make it watchable.
Capital Times (Madison, WI) - 6/10 by Rob ThomasTwo pretty good movies end up becoming a great movie.
One Guy's Opinion - 6/10 by Frank SwietekA stifling, tedious experience...Follow the lead of its title and cross this misfire off your list.
