Monthly Film Bulletin - 8/10 by MFB CriticsAfter a series of prolonged climaxes, with its potential victims staring directly into the camera and shaking with fright, the "Unknown" finally emerges as a type of rolling rubber mattress, disappointingly unhorrific in content and appearance.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 7/10 by Dennis SchwartzDespite its absurd storyline, it's a surprisingly entertaining film that won't deaden your brain cells even if it's a trashy B film sci-fier.
User Review - 10/10 by Andrew RAnother gem amongst the large number of high quality, british science fiction stories from the fifties. A fissure opens up in a quarry where an Army platoon are training. A large, gooey jam-like monster emerges and proceeds to terrorise the nearby scottish communities. As the creature consumes energy it grows, and soon tries to devore a nuclear power station. The acting is good qaulity, it has a decent musical score to compensate for the low-budget special effects and best of all it was a defining piece of hammer-horror.

The film was originally intended by Hammer to be a sequel to the previous year's successful The Quatermass Xperiment, but writer Nigel Kneale refused permission for the character of Bernard Quatermass to be used. The original director of the film was Joseph Losey, working under the name Joseph Walton - Losey was an American director who had moved to the UK after being placed on the Hollywood blacklist. Although Losey did begin shooting the film and some of his footage is included in the final cut, he was replaced by Leslie Norman due to illness. Half the film's budget was provided by Sol Lesser of RKO Pictures. This amount, $30,000, went towards the fee for Dean Jagger. Despite this, an American distribution deal between Hammer and RKO fell through, and the film was distributed in the U.S. by Warner Bros.. Variety wrote that the film was "a highly imaginative and fanciful [melodrama]....There's little letup in the action, and suspense angles are kept constantly to the forefront". In the UK the Daily Telegraph said it was "good, grisly fun" and "a welcomed change from interplanetary yarns" was the verdict of Films and Filming man this is such a thrilling enjoyable classics movie 2 watch.....WARNING THIS MOVIE CONTAINS STROBE LIGHTNING EFFECTS THORUGHOUT SOME SCENES THROUGHOUT THIS MOVIE.....man this is such an amazing classics movie 2 watch, its got a great cast throughout this movie....man this is such a great black/white movie 2 watch, I think that this is such a really well written/acted/directed movie 2 watch, its got a good cast throughout this movie.....man this is such a thrilling 1950's movie 2 watch, its got a great cast throughout this movie.....I think that this is such a great movie 2 watch, with a great cast throughout this movie its such a brilliant movie 2 watch......
User Review - 10/10 by GerryHammer may have perfected horror, but their science fictions are magnificent, with "X" comparing favorably with their "Quatermass" films. Great cast (dig Anthony Newley getting toasted!), and a great premise. Seriously, what's more original-the umpeenth alien invasion from outer space, or sentient, radioactive mud popping up on the Moors? Great stuff, ya betcha! I wonder if Jack Harris and/or Irving Yeoworth used this as inspiration for THE BLOB. Hmm.....
User Review - 10/10 by Royal BAfter the successful Quatermass Xperiment, Hammer wanted the character to be in this movie, but Kneale wisely refused. This isnâ??t on a par with any of the Quatermass tv shows, or movies, but itâ??s still an interesting sci fi movie, and often amusing look at how naive the writers were, when it came to writing about radiation, and how scientists supposedly handled radioactive properties, without wearing any protective gear, or house radiation in a proper environment. But this was made in the 50s, and no one (well script writers) really understood the nature of radiation other than it was used to build a bomb. However this is an enjoyable and an nostalgic trip to an innocent age, with a fun story of a radioactive creature stalking a sleepy village in Scotland.
User Review - 8/10 by Glenn BNice, creative 50s s.f. with a seething blob melting people down. What more could you possibly want?
User Review - 8/10 by Stuart KIn 1955, Hammer Films had a huge box-office success with their adaptation of the BBC's 1953 serial, The Quatermass Xperiment. This sci-fi thriller, scripted by future Hammer veteran Jimmy Sangster, originally started life as a sequel to Quatermass. However, it's creator Nigel Kneale said no, so Hammer made it a film in it's own right, and it's a very good thriller, with a good cast to boot too. During an army training exercise in a remote part of western Scotland, a large earthquake occurs where soldiers involved in the exercise, including Private Lansing (Kenneth Cope) are exposed and injured by radiation exposure. Dr. Royston (Dean Jagger), who works at the nearby Atomic Energy Laboratory, is called in with Inspector McGill (Edward Chapman), to investigate this, and why it happened. But, when villagers in nearby communities to where it happened start dying of radiation poisoning, Royston and McGill deduct that the force is some prehistoric lifeforce which predates man, and has been trying to get to Earth's surface. It's a very good thriller, and it has a good cast of faces from film and TV of that time and later. It was directed by Leslie Norman, (Barry's Dad), who replaced Joseph Losey, who had ran away from the Communist Witch-hunts of America. As a result, it was a difficult production, but it manages to be exciting to watch.
User Review - 6/10 by Kevin OIf you imagine the central character is Bernard Quatermass, it's a very good film
User Review - 6/10 by Carl NDecent Early Hammer Horror tale. Kinda reminds me of The Blob. Kinda reminds me of The Monolith Monsters. VF.
