Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertWhat is perhaps most interesting about Wolfen is that the story remains plausible given its basic assumptions, of course. This is not sci-fi, fantasy or violent escapism. It's a provoking speculation on the terms by which we share this earth with other creatures.
Stream on DemandSean AxmakerThe werewolf movie was revived and reworked with a vengeance in 1981 and Wolfen (1981) was a far more radical take on the genre than An American Werewolf in London or The Howling, though not as popular as either.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzI found it easy to root for the werewolves over the derelicts, millionaires, and arrogant police who were victimized.
Lessons of DarknessNick SchagerSome sort of mixed-up commentary on gentrification.
The New York TimesVincent CanbyWolfen is so good-looking that one tends to ignore a certain but very real inner vacuity.
Film Freak CentralBill ChambersWolfen goes through the paces of a typical detective thriller, but I'll bet you've never seen anything like it.
Fantastica DailyChuck O'LearyThe often muddled, but scary Wolfen tops The Howling and An American Werewolf in London as the best of 1981's three worthwhile lupine thrillers.
Spirituality and PracticeFrederic and Mary Ann BrussatWolfen is a thriller with a metaphysical side to it.
User ReviewMathew GAdmittedly, by comparrison the book is better than the film Wolfen, but because of Albert Finney´s performance I do like the film too. The book explains more about the wolfen, gives them a more human countenance and history. The film however, is very good indeed, particularly due to Finney, James Horner´s music and the coloured negative outlook of the wolfen´s view of the world. It also has a good story as it´s basis, so you want to find out more. Also, unlike today´s batch of horror movies, it is not overlaid with gretuitous amounts of gore, so it´s watchable with intelligence. New York is depicted well and at a time when for many cities all over the world, urban renewal hadn´t taken effect. Consequently, you get lovely rundown areas, perfect for making a worth horror movie in. One definitely to see if you haven´t done so already.
User ReviewDavid FAn awesome flick. A horror flick with a message.
