Since the 17th Century when the Lanier's buried a Whitlock woman alive as a witch and took over the Whitlock estate, the Whitlocks have hungered for revenge. Against the wishes of both families, Amy Whitlock and Bill Lanier are planning on getting married. The Laniers have sent bulldozers onto the old Whitlock Estate to level the land for a construction project. Morgan Whitlock and his daughter Amy make a futile effort to stop the bulldozers that overturn headstones and churn up graves in the Whitlock Cemetery. That night, an overturned coffin opens and Vanessa Whitlock, the witch buried centuries ago, rises from the grave. Together with Morgan, they use their supernatural powers and soon, one-by-one, the Laniers meet with fatal accidents. Tracy Lanier follows Amy into the family crypt and is astonished to see Vanessa and her witches in weird supernatural rites.

User Review - 8/10 by Orlok WThis is one I need to watch again, I remember it being good, but I don't remember why!
User Review - 8/10 by Andrew SWhen an irresponsible contractor desecrates a graveyard, a witch rises from her tomb and a centuries-old feud between two families (one good, one evil) is reignited. Witchcraft is a good, briskly-paced British horror film with crisp, noirish cinematography, assured direction, and a strong cast. It's a fine example of the tradition of British horror films -- such as Curse of the Demon, The Devil Rides Out, and The Wicker Man -- that are built around the idea of the country's ancient religious traditions still existing in the modern era. This sense of the land of Britain being at once ancient and modern makes these films quite different from their American counterparts; in Hollywood horror films, if the Old World is evoked at all, it is usually foreign (e.g., Transylvania) or steeped in dubious representations of the American Indian (e.g., Poltergeist or Wolfen). Watching a movie like Witchcraft always reminds me of the extent to which modern Britain is defined by its colorful past.
User Review - 8/10 by David WThis is a very fun, classic film. Not really scary, but enjoyable to watch!
User Review - 8/10 by Joel KQuality B movie from Don Sharp, the director of Hammer Films cult classic (and one of my all time favorite horror films) Kiss of the Vampire (1963). Made at Shepperton Studios, home to Hammer rival Amicus, among many other film companies. I enjoyed seeing Chaney at the latter stages of his career. Running time is a mere 79 minutes, a big plus.
User Review - 6/10 by byron kA sort of prequel to the film style of Romero's Night of the Living Dead, only tinged with the British sense of religion guilt. Basic, unpretentious, and maybe a bit too understated and empty for its own good, the film follows the basic B film premise of the era. Nothing horrible, just nothing new.
User Review - 6/10 by Victoria SBland and boring occult horror that would likely be forgotten without the (miscast) Lon Chaney Jr. in the cast. Yvette Rees is pretty good, but she's no Barbara Steele.
User Review - 6/10 by Hana FI have no idea how films like this could possibly compete with the stuff that the HAMMER STUDIOS were pumping out at the time but I guess every era has it's "B" movies and this is one of them... Great lighting and camerawork (in only SOME areas of the overall film)... make this picture a tad bit uneven but it's worth a watch if you're in the mood for some swingin' sixties style horror. Clocking in at 79 minutes makes it the absolute perfect length as the film is over long before you start to notice that it's only a 3-star picture... Good for fans of the genre...
User Review - 6/10 by Andy FA forgotten gem that is dripping with spooky atmosphere. Lon Chaney and the rest of the cast are terrific in this ghoulish melodrama.
User Review - 6/10 by Allan CPretty good little British horror film could easily be seen as corny but can is pretty effective and chilling if you get into the spirit of the film.
