Le nouveau heros est un pequin qui admire les legendes de l'Ouest (cf. la rencontre avec Wyatt Earp au debut du film). Autrement dit, le western ne peut plus raconter la legende, mais seulement figurer des personnages qui ont conscience de son existence : c'est la fin de l'innocence, ce que Ford confirmera magistralement, mais douze ans plus tard, dans L'Homme qui tua Liberty Valance. |
