William S. Burroughs: featuring never before seen footage as well as exclusive interviews with his closest friends and colleagues. Born the heir of the Burroughs' adding machine estate, he struggled throughout his life with addiction, control systems, and self. He was forced to deal with the tragedy of killing his wife and the repercussions of neglecting his son. His novel, Naked Lunch, was one of the last books to be banned by the U.S. government. Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer testified on behalf of the book. The courts eventually overturned their decision in 1966, ruling that the book had an important social value. It remains one of the most recognized literary works of the 20th century. William Burroughs was one of the first to cross the dangerous boundaries of queer and drug culture in the 1950s, and write about his experiences. Eventually he was hailed the godfather of the beat generation and influenced artists for generations to come. However, his friends were left wondering, did William ever find happiness? This extremely personal documentary breaks the surface of the troubled and brilliant world of one of the greatest authors of all time. "William S. Burroughs: A Man Within" is the first and only posthumous documentary about this legendary figure.

Movie Reviews

Boxoffice Magazine - 8/10 by Pam GradyLeyser has done his job with this, his first feature, burnishing Burroughs' legend and making manifest the enormous shadow he still casts over writers and artists of all stripe.
Boston Globe - 8/10 by Ty BurrA breezily stylized, very enjoyable trot through the writer's life, theme by theme, era by era.
San Francisco Chronicle - 8/10 by David LewisThe film is never dull. And director Yony Leyser has come up with an ending that will take your breath away. Burroughs would probably be proud.
Entertainment Weekly - 8/10 by Chris NashawatyA well-made but overly idolizing documentary.
Combustible Celluloid - 8/10 by Jeffrey M. AndersonThis one is more geared toward people who aren't already fans, though fans will find much to enjoy.
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette - 8/10 by Philip MartinBurroughs was a quasi-obsession of mine during my youth and young manhood, and he's the only Beat (including Keoroac) that I don't feel I have to some extent outgrown. He was also ... an extremely "strange ranger."
Slant Magazine - 8/10 by Joseph Jon LanthierThe documentary persuasively argues that Burrough's most dangerous addiction might have been the refusal of love.
Village Voice - 7/10 by Nick PinkertonLeyser's collation of interviews and stock footage is polished enough to effectively perpetuate the Burroughs legend.
Variety - 7/10 by John AndersonThere is a wealth of anecdotal material. Like his subject, Leyser strives to disengage from the conventional, while still being lucid. He succeeds admirably.
The A.V. Club - 7/10 by Keith PhippsOffers a concise summary of Burroughs' life and works. Maybe too concise. At a mere 88 minutes, it feels a bit glancing. But as an introduction or refresher course, it gets the job done.
