Slant Magazine - 9/10 by Ed GonzalezWho's Camus Anyway doesn't simply reflect our love for the movies, it responds to it as well.
Not Coming to a Theater Near You - 8/10 by Leo GoldsmithThe Japanese propensity for faithful imitation is the focus of Yanagimachi's film, and, most of all, the imitation of life through the cinema.
Filmjourney - 6/10 by Doug CummingsWhile it's chock full of film references, colorful characters, and social eccentricities, its true sophistication emerges gradually, posing complex questions about the roles of fantasy, identity, and volition in modern life.
User Review - 10/10 by Lady DNo wonder why Japan is one of the greatest movie makers for almost a century!! I almost lost the word.. SUPERB** "Simply Wonderful, Originally creative, Questionable, Psychological Tester, A Real Piece of Art!!" Mitsuo Yanagimachi is a great storytelling.. with brilliant Story.. the way he presented it.. The Cast is perfect!! all charactors are interestin'.. I could touch every single word they said or acted.. I can say That's a great way of directing.. How can you present a charactor in a mood!! And Yes i love Albert Camus' works, specially "L'Etranger" which amatuer movie makers in this movie used as a main story of their movie.. I picked it from the shelf in the indy DVD store cause of that!! But i never ever think i'll find an Unknown Masterpiece!! Every parts of the movie contains Realistic atmosphere. So it's tense and real. Like a documentary. And the ending is so clever in extreme way! And it is a question for anyone to answer.... I can see there's none of my friend here watched it.. I insist this is the must see for Everyone who's eager for something new.. something interestin'.. something creative.. even something insane.. PS. Please anybody.. i can't upload picture to this great movie.. Could you give me a hand about that?? Thanks anyway
User Review - 10/10 by Stella DNow streaming on Netflix. This film is just bursting with life and energy. Yanigimachi's choreography of actors and extras is both bustling but controlled. It seems like anything could happen in this movie.
User Review - 8/10 by Jack Wfilm on film done correctly. camus in japanese - who knew?
User Review - 8/10 by Jin Cthis movie is like an inside joke. its best enjoyed if you know what they're talking about. the movie heavily references the films "death in venice" and "a story of adele h," camus' "the stranger," and french new wave films. i was only familiar with "the stranger" and new wave, but i still really liked this movie. the camera work is really interesting, the characters are funny and real (and well acted), and the ending is a disturbing yet satisfying mindfuck. i also loved the tense music used throughout the film. there's a great scene where two characters converse and ominous orchestra music plays in the background. the camera pans up behind them to show students on different levels of the building playing their instruments, the source of the song. good movie.
User Review - 8/10 by Arick Wvery camus, pretty much an eclectic mix of tarantino, godard, etc. absolutely stunning.
User Review - 8/10 by Jacob HA delightfully unique movie that celebrates cinema and reminds us of the fragility of art. But, of course, art is a reflection of us, so we too must be as fragile as movie. This movie reminds that life is indeed like a movie. I really enjoyed all the direct and indirect reference to classic cinema, espcially the French masters.
User Review - 8/10 by Prima SShows interesting points of the bureaucracy of making a movie and has a lot of references that makes analogies in the movie work. Luckily, I've got the main reference to Albert Camus' Meursault because of a "The Cure" song, but the movie may not make much sense if you don't know the references... I'd probably give it a 3 out of 5 in that case. =P Anyway, the movie makes a good mix of what's happening in the movie they are making and what happens in "real life".
