A millionaire past his prime, and his young wife, arrive in Kenya circa 1940 to find that the other affluent British expatriates are living large, as the homefront gears up for war. The painful ways in which the self-destructive bored rich (and wealth-seeking parasites) seek to amuse themselves plays off against the background of Kenya. Here, the arrogance of the 'ruling class' is portrayed in subtle yet powerful ways. In one scene a Kenyan servant is setting up targets for the Bwana to practice his shooting. He's almost killed when the Bwana lets off a shot before he's even walked away. Subtle yet devastating! |
