"Powstanie Warszawskie" ("Warsaw Uprising") is the world's first feature film assembled entirely of documentary materials. The film tells the story of the Warsaw Uprising as seen by two young brothers, filmmakers of Uprising Chronicles, carrying orders of Propaganda Bureau of the Armia Krajowa. They are direct witnesses to the street fights against Germans and dream of shooting the "real" war. Initially, however, they document the life of capital's civilians. Such materials are expected from their commander, giving them the task of preparing the journal, which is to be displayed in the cinema "Palladium". Looking for suitable shots they go deeper and deeper into actual fights. In the end, they manage to join one of the fight units, which they follow in action. The characters realize that they had to participate in something beyond their wildest dreams - the world in which they find themselves is the world after the apocalypse. They realize that their role is to document the apocalypse and keep safe the tapes at all costs.

Little White LiesAnton BitelIt might perhaps have been better to leave this extraordinary assemblage of real found footage to speak for itself - but that cameraman's commentary on his own acts of image-making and eyewitness also helps viewers relate to [the] material
Los Angeles TimesGary GoldsteinWarsaw Uprising is not only a unique, remarkably assembled documentary-narrative hybrid but also a powerful look at the personal and public devastation that can occur during wartime. Movies rarely feel as authentic as this.
The New York TimesNicolas RapoldWarsaw Uprising is marred by a fictional audio drama among three characters (two cameraman brothers and an American airman) who provide an unnecessary, distracting and at times amateurish frame to this resourcefully, even wittily, edited tour. But the flaws don’t detract from the film’s casual and calamitous sights.
Village VoiceDiana ClarkeDespite its context in a global conflict, Uprising is a strangely intimate film.
User ReviewRouceExcellent! Simply the best historic "movie" that I've ever seen, because this work has been entirely made from real life documentary materials which were recolored for the most part with few exceptions, so there's not a mentality barrier which tells you "This happened in another era" but makes it believable that it's just 2-3 generations back. Everything you see are real people and real stories and the movie focuses on 2 polish brothers who were filming the warsaw uprising to gather evidence about what happens rather than fighting as soldiers of the Polish Home Army. It stays interesting and touching mostly and is as propaganda free as something can get. A recommendation for everyone who is interested in the events of WW2.
