Chicago ReaderDave KehrLuis Buñuel returned to his native Spain to create this 1961 masterpiece, which marked his rebirth as a filmmaker of international repute.
The SpectatorIsabel QuiglyWhat limits [Buñuel's] morality play and blunts its force is the fact that he has so little to set against it.
Slant MagazineEd GonzalezMore than 40 years after its original release, Viridiana remains one of the most shocking films ever made.

Blogcritics.orgAlan DaleThe man who made Los Olvidados believes in ... reform. In Viridiana he more fully, and comically, acknowledges the immense hurdles to reform set up by human corruption.
User ReviewDavey MWhat a movie. Explosive. The final half hour is a thing to behold. One of Bunuel's best films. Beautiful and grotesque. It's a film with a broken heart and a contrite spirit--it would be easily to call it cynical, but it's too full of life and spirit for that. What a movie.
User ReviewArash Bdefinitely one of my top 5 movies of all times!
User ReviewBarney BAnne, I don't think Bunuel is necessarily talking about the futility of charity. He seems more focused on charitable need - both the giver and and taker's need. It's not so much Viridiana's desire to do charitable works that causes the problem. It's why she's doing it, and the need that doing charitable works fulfills in her. Bunuel seems to be saying that, though she's ministering to the poor, she's doing it for the wrong reason and therefore doing it in a way that ultimately blows up in her face. Thinking about what happens, is it fair to say the poor react to Viridiana with the same contempt that she levels at them?
User ReviewBuddy KSimultaneously a affecting drama and a piercing satire of organized religion as only Bunuel could do it, with a great performance by Silvia Pinal.
