Spirituality and PracticeFrederic and Mary Ann BrussatA well-acted and well-directed musical biodrama about the life and career of the Chilean singer and songwriter Viola Parra.
Chicago ReaderBen SachsThe formulaic storytelling has the unfortunate effect of making her extraordinary story feel familiar, though Wood's impressionistic style is a refreshing antidote to the portentousness one comes to expect from movies like this.
New York PostFarran Smith NehmeThe biographical bits soon feel like a distraction from the music, performed by Gavilán. It’s heard often, but not often enough. Judging by the movie, Parra’s songs are fiery and haunting, sometimes sensuous, sometimes bleak. When Parra sings, the movie becomes worthwhile.
New York TimesJeannette CatsoulisMr. Wood has created a poignant portrait of an artist unable to escape the stamp of her class or the burdens of aging.
Village VoiceSimon AbramsBy inexpertly filtering her art through her travails, Wood and Altunaga reimagine Parra's suicide as an explicable conclusion to her turbulent life.
What CultureShaun MunroMore enjoyable as an exploration of Parra's music than her life, and well-performed by lead Francisca Gavilán.
Slant MagazineDiego SemereneSuffers from an overtly conventional way of depicting the life events of an anything-but-conventional woman, a lazy flaw further highlighted by its brief moments of visual experimentation.
User ReviewRaphael GAn extraordinary film about an extraordinary artist. Her music is beautiful, and I am grateful to those who made this film because Violeta's is a story that needed to be told! Bravo!
User ReviewLaurie TVioleta, an early compiler and performer of traditional Chilean folk music, is played by an actress and singer who convincingly channels her rebellious spirit.
